SR Sr20det timing problem

So I made a post recently about an over boosting problem and was directed to checking my timing.

I did everything I was supposed to let it warm up, unplug the TPS and rev it to 3k 2-3 times, etc

Problem is after all that the car sits idling at like 2k I didn't know that wasn't normal so I started to adjust the CAS to the 2nd mark from the right and now the car runs like shit.

So did I miss something or is there something wrong with the idle because as far as I have seen when other sr20's CAS is unplugged the idle goes right back down.

I'm also running an Apexi neo AFC is there a problem with that???

After getting it in base idle mode, you need to adjust the idle via iacv screw.

Adjust it to where you want it. 850 +- 50 RPM.

THEN adjust the timing accordingly

You should be able to reach it with a screw driver.

And how are you using the timing gun? Are you connecting it to the inductive loop on the coil pack harness?

On the greddy, the iacv is located on the underside of the manifold. Looks like a small square box with a big + screw on it. 1/4 turn at a time.

Im not sure that will give you a proper reading. A common method, which has worked for me and many others, is to get an old spark plug wire and cut the portion of it that plugs into a distributor off... Stick that end in to the coil pack(part that goes over spark plug), and then plug the wire in to the spark plug. And take the reading from that.

One more quick question.

How am I supposed to set the timing and idle with both of them being off?

When you play with timing your idle changes and if I pay with the idle and get it right on the wrong timing that will change it to so how am I supposed to do it?

They're both out of whack...

I had the same problem/question as you did recently after installing my SR20. Luckily for me, my PowerFC controller indicated my timing to make things easier. Anyway. So what you want to do is adjust your idle to 850 +/- 50 RPM by turning the IACV adjustment screw. Once you set the idle, then set your timing by adjusting the CAS. And to make sure everything is squared away. Repeat the process again (set idle, then set timing) until the idle and timing is correct.

And also, I did what javi mentioned earlier with sticking a sparkplug wire into the coil so that you can get an "accurate" signal by clamping your timing gun onto.

That was the only way we could get a timing light to work on my friend's SR. It's odd though, because on my SR, the timing light works from both the loop at the back of the head and the wire right at coil 1, I think I even had the induction pickup around all three wires. Same light was used on both motors that both have stock ignition system.

I didn't have to cut anything from the spark plug wire in order to attach it to the coil. I ended up peeling back the rubber boot from where the spark plug wire is connected to a distributor and shove it into the coil
