Carputer thoughts.

As some of you may know, I recently came out of an Audi A4, in which I custom fabbed in fiberglass a 7" TFT Touchscreen connected to a computer in the trunk.

Looking at the s13 center console, I see much potential for the same setup. It looks as though there is almost enough room as it is to almost drop it in now.

The question is, should I do it?

In the Audi, I had the car connected to the pc with an ODBII cable for unlimited control of all things electronic on the car (custom digital gauges, fuel maps, butt dynos, etc.) Is there anything similar worth using on the s13 240? I'm still a total noob in this car so please forgive me.

Also, other non-car specific toys are the standard DVD, CD, Radio, GPS, Wireless Aircard for internet, Linksys router for when I'm parked or 'war driving,' and lots and lots of DivX porn

Has anyone else attempted this? Can something like the HKS Camp System plug into a pc/laptop?

Thoughts?

somebody around here did it (maybe nico). he fiberglassed a touchscreen into the spot for the radio and slot, a dvd drive, HD and wireless network card, in addition to all the other computer stuff. it was an awesome setup, worth searching for.

Wow! The maxima was SUPER clean. When you were using the headunit, what was the screen doing? Could you control volume, etc. with the H/U or was this a carputer at all? Is that H/U a DVD player?

actually im going to be integrating a computer into my car soon enough as well. www.mp3car.com has everything youll need for research. I plan on not going touchscreen and molding a trackball into my center console. ive got an EMS so im going to be using the screen for programming on the fly and sensor output. Im also picking up a gps mouse off ebay for like 40$ and using my screen for a navigation system. you can get a cheap wireless 802.11g and connect to the internet at hotspots, play your mp3s off the hard drive, if you have a nice alarm like me you can plug into the alarm and program it change settings etc. get voice control of everything or write emails etc all through voice synthesis in a microphone. if you have a later s14 you can plug into the obdII as well. limits are endless and you can pull one off really cheap too.

I saw a setup like this where a guy used a touch screen and old computer parts lying around. I saw this in a 350z forum called my350z.com. He had links to what screen he used to wires and stuff like that. I would do something like this and use that DataScan. But I just don't like having a screen in my car, looks tacky. But if it monitors your engine vital signs then I might be up for it.

I just posted about using Nissan Datascan, which has custom gauges, speed tests, datalogging.
