Strange crusie control problem

I was driving home from Atlanta today and my cruise control went crazy on me. It deactived on its own and the cruise light started flashing at me and did not stop until I hit the button to turn the cruise control system off on the dashboard. I stopped to get gas a bit later and once I got back on the road I tried it again and it worked perfectly for the rest of the trip. The thing is for the past month or so it has been real selective on when it wants to work, turning the car off and back on always got it to work again. Anyone have any idea what is going on? I would hate to loose cruise control because I drive up to Philly all the time. Also, if it means anything I drive a s14.
