Yesterday well after looking at my bank account, tuition, and mortgage coming up I didn't get an intake for my 92 coupe. So after thinking for a little while, I removed the "Y" piping from my air box leaving a nice 4 inch hole and then wondered what it would be like to just punch a hole in the bottom of the air box. I know that I am going to be buying a new filter every month, but isn't this what an aftermarket intake does? More air to the engine? I got a saw out and did it. I noticed a nice increase in power and the sound is sweet! Last month, I just went all around my car and R2 brakes in the front, clutch, tires and O2 sensor. Went from a good car to a great car. Umm is my car a S-13? I am not sure what the terms you guys use are. Thanks for your input. I guess my next step is a muffler and a short shifter.

I wouldn't think that gave you any more than 2-3hp, but it does give the car a throatier growl....and hey, it was free.
Your car is an S13.
May I suggest you replace the exhaust piping from the cat back with a pre-made aftermarket unit, or a custom one from a muffler shop...mandrel bent, of course. Just a muffler isn't gonna do a whole lot.
BTW, welcome.

what Lance said and
1) I don't know the design of the s13 airbox, but I'll assume you cut the hole before the filter?
2) get a K&N drop in filter. You can clean it and it breathes better.

Hey, I just did that yesterday. I like the way my car sound now. I don't want to change out my exhaust because I don't want too much attention drawn to my car. What are some other cheap ways to make your car a little better?

Free stuff is hard to come by. I'd say other than the air box thing two other free things to do would be getting the perfect air pressure in your tires and a weight reduction. I noticed NO increase in power from the resinator box removal in my s14 but it sounds cooler and maybe I got 1hp *shrugs* yeah, it was free and it sounds cool. Weight reduction, I noticed a better "feeling" and again sounds cooler inside but still, no faster...not a noticable speed increase on public roads anyway. And getting the perfect air pressure definately made the car faster...best thing you can do to your car for free!
Really though, the best free thing you can do to make your car faster is to practice driving it

I did the same thing and dropped in a K&N filter. Honestly, I think this is probably as good as buying an actual intake because the stock platic pipe isn't all that resrtictive. The only other difference is flat vs. cone, and our flat filters are pretty big, and I think some studies have shown that the cone doesn't actually flow that much more in our type of application.
