s13 Help me to make a decision please ...

I am almost done gathering parts for the 5 speed conversion on a s13

here comes the final parts the transmission, flywheel, and the drive shaft. I have found 2 from 2 different local junk yard.

junk yard no.1 claims that transmission has around 80K - 90k miles on the transmission (on the shelf). this junk yard wants $250 for the it. and 90 days warranty. $ 250 just for the transmission. nothing else.

junk yard no.2, the transmission is still on the car. odo shows 140K miles, i assume the tramssision also has 140K on it. this junk yard also wants $250 for the trasmission. however, they throw me the flywheel, crossmember and the driveshaft for free. So, $250 for all those. but the condition is unknown since the parts are still on the car. this car's been sitting there for a while as i know. this junk yard will warranty the parts for 30 days.

Please help me to make a decision. once i got these parts i am good to go.

thank you

I would take the tranny with more shit. If the tranny has any nosies or problems take it back for that price.

I wouldnt want to use the stock flywheel or driveshaft really. Light weight chromoloy flywheel and a aluminum custom driveshaft by a local shop. Cost a little bit more but come on, thats the biz aint it?

That is a good idea, and would be just fine for a "later on, down the road" idea, but in the interest of getting it done and taking into consideration comparative cost, I would go ahead and get the stuff off of this car as he has described.

does it really make a lot of differences with the mileage on the transmission. first of all, I dont even know if the first junk year was telling the truth about the mileage on the transmission. but it junk yard number 1 is telling the truth. then the trans is half the mileage from the second junkyard

of course mileage matters.

but other factors matter as well, like who was driving the car and how they were driving it.

i would get the tranny with the driveshaft and crossmember.

get the install done quick. if there are issues with it, you should know pretty quick. if its fine starting out and breaks 31 days later, just chalk it up to bad luck. you never know, it could've happened on the 90k tranny as well.

$250 for a flywheel and $500 for a driveshaft may be out of his budget.

Mileage isn't as big as maintenance. Ether one of those could have been raped and put away wet. You don't know which it is. The 140k one has twice the odds for abuse but, why is a 70k S13 in the junkyard? Trade offs.

if you're thinking about installing aftermarket junk later on, i would install the lightweight flywheel now. the driveshaft can wait. if you want a lightweight flywheel later, you have to basically do a full clutch job just to get to the damn thing.

while you're in there doing the 5spd swap, it's a good chance to replace the rear main oil seal on the engine. its a few bucks from your nissan dealership.

even still, compare one that comes with the cost of the tranny and whatnot to even the 280 you described

after reading the reply from you guys. i did some research on the a piece drive shaft and the fadanza flywheel. driveshaft is like 400 form ebay, and the flywheel is 280.. that's another 500 bucks. i am reallie short on the budget already. um.. may do those in the future

actually its more like 700 bucks.

anyway, if you're serious about the flywheel, do it now or regert it later. if you just want to get it on the road, stick with the stocker.
