installed new h2o pump, now she wont run
i put a new water pump in my car, 91 motor in a 90 chassi. started her up to circulate the coolant through the system... and it starts at 1500 rpm, then 5 seconds later drops to 900 rpm, 5 seconds later drops to 500rpm, then stalls. this happens every time i start it. everything seems to be plugged up (sensors, vacuum lines) any advice?

I'll assume you know how to add coolant and bleed it.
So Q1 Did the temp rise higher than normal? Q2 Did it run long enough to reach operating Temp? Check battery and alternator If it fluctuated rpm like 1500 900 1500 900 ect then maybe it's the coolant temp sensor or your overheating because your pump isn't working. but just dying out maybe it's the battery.

battery is new, yes i know how to bleed coolant, the temp did not rise. it did reach operating temp because i kept tugging on the throttle and it kept it alive. i dont see why the pump wouldnt work because its brand new, and i tested to make sure the parts move before i put it in. its not an overheating issue, i'm pretty sure... although the car has overheated before, hence the need for a new water pump. but it ran fine before i took it apart to put the new water pump in.
the water pump was leaking at the seams, it did not break, so i just filled it back up with coolant and drove it around the neighborhood, so even after the car had overheated, i know that it ran just as well as it did before it overheated... so i must have fucked something up with the install? if you move the belts around thats connected to p/s and water pump and all that, can you mess up the timing? i dont think so, but it could be another possibility |

Never seen that happend but it's always a possibility but why i don't think you through off the timing is becuase it's set internally by a chain or belt. if you were replacing your cams then yeah it's a major possibility.
Also how long did the car sit before you replaced the pump. I wanna help you but i keep reading the post over and it makes me feel like it's you battery or electrical maybe even a sensor. Is the Idle smooth but erratic?(like 20 seconds or so at 1500 then drops) Try a different battery then post what happens.

i think i know what it is.... when the rain stops (lord knows when that will be) im gunna loosen up the belt a little. i think i overtightened/overtorqued it
i didnt know anything about belts, i thought they were supposed to be really tight then my mechanic said that if i dont torque it, i should be able to grab the belt and twist it 90 degrees... .....i cant even twist it 10 degrees |

Bingo. Hopefully you didn't warp a pulley in the process.

well... i loosened it to 90 degrees and it was basically falling off... so i tightened it a little... probably to like 65 degrees-ish. still stalls...and now my power steering is erratic... like when i turn the wheel, its easy, then harder, then easy, then harder... i would assume this is because the belt is too loose, no?
![]() this next pic is the belt while the car is running.... is it supposed to arc out like that on the left? or is it supposed to be straight/pulled tighter? ![]() i also found 2 vacuum lines that arent connected to anything... i dont know what they would connect to though. ![]() sigh...i feel like this should be so easy but i just suck at life ![]() |

um, i see a very big problem in that picture...u didnt attach the hole in the bottom of the stock intake to that resonator box thats down there, thus inducing a massive leak in ur intake

Those 2 hoses have something to do with the charcoal cannister...I think one comes from the gas tank to the cannister and one goes from the cannister to the intake mani...there is a diagram in the FSM.
And the belt...I dont know anything about belts either but Im pretty sure the "twisting 90*" part means looking at the front of the motor you would twist the belt foward to back. There is definately not supposed to be that much slack in it.

everything that i can see is hooked up. i dont see anything loose that would connect to the hoses i found. i looked at the vacuum diagram and it looks like there are hoses that are supposed to be there that i never had at all... but didnt have trouble with it before? i dunno... strange. ill just take it to a shop, pay too much, but at least have it fixed.
