My first 240 ^_^ Likes/Dislikes *pics*

So for about the last I say six weeks or so I have been looking for 240. I had always liked them but neer actually thought about picking one up. Because of the datsun I have not wanted to buy anything to take away funds from getting that project finished. Buuuuut, I couldnt handle driving my civic anymore and I did everything to get it cleaned up and sold her and finally picked up my first 240.

The car so far is cool. I mean its 16 years old and still stock so theres not a whole lot I can really say. Its hard to describe how much i like it I guess since I need to replace everything thats worn out over the years. The best thing I can do is compare it to my FC which may or may not be a good idea. Sitting in the driver seat the two cars feel similar. The FC feels a bit smaller all around but the front is pretty clsoe to the same. I think once I update some of the bushings and stiffin it up a bit I will liek the car much much more.

I had five things I was looking for in a car.

1. 5 spd
2. KA24de
3. Straight Body
4. No Sunroof
5. Under 2000

Finding the car was pretty difficult haha since so many people tried selling me the worst of the worst for way to high prices. Thankfully I got 4 out of the 5 and for $1900. The car has a KA24E but in a weird turn of events I think may have changed my mind and decided to put the sohc in the datsun. Well see, theres still lots of time. Either way I will be buying a dohc, it will either go in the datsun or the 240.... Uhm so yea..

I snagged some decent springs and shocks from Derux so the car doesnt look to bad. I put that in the other day and noticed that I should probobly replace every bushing under the car, there all wasted haha. So that will most liekly be the next step, and I noticed today just how bad it has been leaking. Not to mention the valve cover gasket needs to be changed too haha.. so yea anyways.. there she is... I prolly post more pics of the work up later... so yea, there she is (I have not named her yet)

Looks like an awesome car!

Personally, though, I NEVER buy a car that's sitting in primer. It's usually an attempt to hide poor bodywork that's covering other damage and/or rust.

I'd rather buy a car with mismatched body panels (bodywise) or damage that I can see (so I can assess for myself what needs to be done). Ideally, I buy cars that still wear the original paint.

BUT, that being said, your car looks really, really straight .

Looks can be decieving. I bought a 240 that had body damage, the quarter panel had some damage but it could be fixed with metal work and filler. Turns out that underneath the paint was all kinds of nastiness. The quarter had been sectioned wrong and it was almost an inch think in filler in places. You don't always know what your getting into, even though the body "looks" straight. A good rule of thumb, if you knock on the panel and it doesn't sound like metal, it's probably not.

My post is mainly about what I like and dont liek about the car. The pics are just a bonus ^_^ so Im sure the post is fine...

as for purchasing a car covered in primer... I see where that could be kind of a warning sign for body damage. The seller actually pointed out anything and eerything body wise that had happened that he knew of. The only thing that were fixed body wise was the driver door, which u can tell is slightly off, and on the passenger side theres a dent and a few small holes where someone tried jacking the car up on the wrong spot.

Another thing I noticed about the car is hw high it is... I put those Tein springs in and the Tokicos and its still pretty high.. crazy. Also I knew from driving Derux's old f/b that the seats were not that great but these S13 seats have to be the worst seats ever made by a car company. Ok wel I am off to paint the taillights now haha..

that's not why buying a primer car sucks. you missed the point...

there could be little rust spots under there that were just sprayed over. you'll find out in a a couple months to a year when they start bubbling underneath the coat.

this is why it sucks. you have two choices:

sand it down to the bare metal and check for rust & shoddy body work yourself. fix it all, primer again. that would be a huge pain in the ass.

have it painted and pray to god there isnt any rust under that primer, and curse when your nice new paint job starts developing rust bubbles. that would be a huge waste of money.

that's why ram said he'd rather buy a car with mismatched body panels and obvious damage...

Aww IC .. well I guess all I can do is hope that there is no rust. If they tried covering anyhting up they did a damn good job cuz the car is really smooth. Although just now while painting the lights I noticed what might have been a small accient in the rear. Im guessing from the marks inside that is was banged out and the car is perfect on the outside... I dont really plan on painting it soon, thats too much cash that could go towards my 510 so well jus have to wait and see what happens.

Because I do a lot of city driving, and to from school driving, I really want to put in a short shifter... the long shifs are irritating. Anyone have any favorites?

Now with the higher quality pieces like B&M are they ok for just regular street use? On my civic I just bought one of those cheap $10 ebay ones just to shorten the throw to make it a more comfertable drive, I wasnt really worried about strength or anyhting. With the 240 I dont mind spending a bit but if its overkill to buysomething liek a B&M I wonder if theres something a step or two down from that.

B&M is the best in a lot of Zilvians minds. The B&M vs. EGay knock-off argument has been beaten to death. It's really up to you.

dont sweat it man... i wasn't trying to scare you. imo just rock it the way it is and deal with it as problems come up. if you decide to paint it down the road, then you can do full body work and rust and what not... it's good as a learning experience anyway.

Yea I own a Datsun 510 its the car in my avatar ^_^ Sooo yea Im waiting on a price on the shifter.. my friend can get me clutch and brake stuff at cost so im hopin he can do the same for the shifter. It will deff be worth the money then.

I took another look under the car today just for fun, man I really need to change all these bushings... they are sooo gone haha. Im guessing thts where the crappy feeling is coming from. Cuz after adding the Stechs and Tokico's I was hoping for a bit of an improvement, but I got nothing.

I may be getting a rustless, 90 hatch with power options and what not for 400 bucks, supposedly mint interior and exterior, if so I claim deal of the year.

That is a pretty damned solid deal.

So far this year, I've scored a $280 S13, a $1100 Auto 95, a $1300 5spd 95, and a $1200 unbelievably mint 92 auto hatch.

I almost got a 98 black 5spd for $2800, but I got beat to the punch.

Bummer... I changed the valve cover gasket and the two half circle plastic pieces since it was leaking, and I found out that one of the bolts wasnt even tight. The threads on the head are stripped. Hopefully I will get it fixed today.

I was asking around what kind of clutch to go with since the one in the car now is slipping, I 2 I heard most about was exedy and illegal garage. I just decided to go with OEM since Im not really in need of anything special, plus I can get it for 90 bux!

its that white primer?? looks kinda dull. looks good though.
i'd advise against the short shifter(b&m). i've driven with one..its super weird..scary even. it almost hard to tell wut gear its in or if its even in neutral....takes getting used to. its an acquired feel. its not fun 4 daily personaly.
its good...ungodly short throw!!! lol but thas my .02
