broken Nismo wheel studs.... wheel fell off

So I got my car back from Discount Tire company and guess what... 3 wheel studs weren't torqued on properly so i torqued them myself.... well i drive my car around for awhile including a 75mph cruise on the freeway... pull up to a stop light after about 20 miles of cruisin. light turns green and i shift in to 1st wheels move for about half a foot and clunk.... wheel fell off.... 4 Nismo studs completely broke off! and shattered my wheel spacer into 6 pieces! Now.... I paid a $88 tow to my house and now have my baby sittin on a jack and to top things off, I have to put new wheel studs on and miss the Broncos game tomorrow
Does anyone know If I can take them to court for this? I searched up and down on the invoice and no disclaimers.... anyone with advice?

I would have but I don't have the equipment to put new tires on... aside from that I have done all the work on my car since I first bought it.

ah then some advice:

1) never EVER trust tire shops unless they are friends and even then, do the mounting ofwheels yourself
2) always have extra wheels, put those on and get the tires put on the wheel you always drive on, this way YOU are the one doing the checking
3) carry a torque wrench always and check your wheels before leaving

these tire shops usually hire morons and fuckheads who get paid minumum wage. dont trust ANYONE

The last places I went to were pep boys and bigO, and they were actually checking the chart for torque specs. when i was taking the wheels off a week later to work on shit, they were torqued down HARD. maybe they were overtorqued. or maybe you bought knockoffs? ahaha anyway, file a compaint. you can get ocmpensation of there's no disclaimer of this sort. Like when i first got my car, i took it to discount to get some tires mounted. When i came back to pick up the car, i looked and one of the wheels had 3 broken studs with no lug nut on there! Mind you, i had just walked inside to get my keys and they didnt mention a thing to me. I was insanely pissed and i proceeded to walk back inside and raise total hell. I told the manager he was a total idiot (among other things...lol) and said how they broke stuff and didnt say anything. I made sure several other customers heard me as well. A couple people actually walked out with me too! That was awesome. Anyway, i've never been to a discount tire since.

In short, DoriftoSlut is right. Unless you know somebody that works there, big name tire shops are a complete joke. ESPECIALLY, Discount tire. OMG they're retarded. You should definitely be able to get something out of this though.

bolts are inherently brittle. They're not made for any type of bending, and are used only for their tensile stength (to mate two flat surfaces together).


The failure was very likely caused by the technician...I shouldn't even call them technicians....

my friend had the same problem on his S14...except his wheel didn't fell off on the highway @ 75mph

75??? no no, I was going 75 and it didn't fall off. It had the courtesy to wait until I was at a stop light. And they told me they wouldn't work on it the first time with the spacers so I told them not to put them back on if it was a problem. Well they friggin put them on anyways.... The stress caused the spacer to crack into pieces and I think that's when it gave way... when there was no more equal pressure on the studs.

yeah fuck that aluminum nismo bullshit, arp model #100 7708, you need new lugnuts though, if you break these things your hardcore.

sounds like they overtouqued the lugs, stripped them, and when you checked them and tried to retightened them ended up weakening them more and then they just gave way. I had a somewhat similar problem (although my wheel didn't fall off) with some shady mechanics getting off wheel lugs that I didn't have a key for, took it back to 'em raised hell, said they fixed it and stripped more studs, said screw it and fixed it myself.

I'd go back to the place and try and get your money back and then just fix it yourself.

i have always used a air gun on my lugs i havent broke a lug yet but i have the gun set low so i dont most grease monkeys dont care and break shit and just leave it

i figured i would throw my .02 cents out here, i work at Sears in the automotive center as a sales associate and i can tell you that a wheel falling off for any reason is basically grounds for whatever tire tech to be terminated immeadeatly.

The best thing to do if you just don't trust anyone is to do like the others have said and take the tires and rims up there by themselves off the vehicle and have it done that way.

however, i am completely comfortable in taking my car up to the shop and letting them put my wheels on, but what i do is i specify that the level 4 tech that i know is extremely trustworthy perfroms the work on my car.

another thing you can do that we have no problem w/ at all is you can actually go out into the shop and watch the tech put your wheels on and torque them properly. anytime you watch someone they are more prone to no cut corners and do things properly.

Sears pushes proper torqueing w/ a torque wrench, as it really doesn't take any longer than using a air wrench and its just the right thing to do. we also put on our receipts that tells people to come back after 25 miles and we will retorque the lugnuts for you to ensure that everything is good.

At Costco they do the smae thing.They run the lugs down with the air gun on low,then torque the wheels with a torque wrench and THEN they call the store or asst manager in to check the torque on the wheels also.Best I've seen so far.

here's my 2 cents b/c i work at discount. Everybody is right when they hire anybody. a lot of people are not trained properly. Best thing to do is request a manager to work on your car. if not try to get the best tech. Stuff breaks when you have billy joe using powered tools on a easilly fucked up car. for example, not using blocks on cars with side skirts, not using thin wall sockets on expensive small hole wheels, etc. a lot cars are hard to work on. If a noob comes and works on a car when he can barely work on trucks and shit, you car is gonna get fucked up. also it's not entirely the noob's fault. they don't train properly. and also they are being yelled at and shit to hurry up and get the cars out. in trying to keep their job, they skip a few steps. these steps they skip are what fucks shit up

p.s. the proper way to install wheels with a gun is: low setting and a torque stick. the torque stick torques it to 50-80 lbs (whatever size it is) then you drop the car and torque it according to specs.

p.ps.s. a lot of these places are cheap on tools. they have to understand these tools are being used all day, 6 or 7 days a week. I haven't seen many shops do the proper maintenece. It's okay on most tools but torque wrenches have to checked everyday. I remeber one time i checked the torque wrenches for accuracy. you'll be surpriesed at the results and this is the reason for wheels falling off and over tightning.
1 came out perfect
1 came out low, meaning if you set it to 80 it will torque at 50-55
2 came out high, torque at 80 and you are actually torqing at 110

discount tire is required to write down the torque and the tech who torqued it. this goes back to my post about not being trained properly and managers telling tech to hurry the fuck up. therefore techs skip writing shiot down in order to be fast

Thats funny that badboy6686 works at sears as I work for sears as well and I wouldn't trust the auto center in my store with putting air in my tires let alone anything else but thats just my unit.

In response to the original post, I believe that discount tire is required to note the tourqe and tech who performed the work. If not this is a point that you can use against the shop in your favor, also ask for proof of correct tourqe stick use, these sticks are meant to act as a safegaurd against overtourqing.

Yeah, they wrote the torque and the tech... the torque was written down as 90 lbs/ft and the tech who tightened it was not the same tech who started the job... who I requested work on my car.

I'm surprised they worked on your car with the spacers. I had 25mm Kics awhile ago and they refused to work on my car. To my understanding they don't want to be liable for shit if you have spacers/adapters, hence refusing to work on my car with adapters. Discount blows, just complain to the head honcho, that's what I did when they scratched my wheels. Cause a scene haha. Goodluck!

you said you had spacers on your car, right? were they hub centric ones? If not, that spacer might have had plenty to do with it. Basically, the studs were absorbing a lot of the stress cuz of that spacer.

In any case, you should be able to complain to them about this. They were the last people that worked on your tires and wheels.

well I work at Discount and lets just say 9 times out of 10 if you complain enough and make a big enough deal out of it, they WILL fix it for free. After all, they have insurance for this exact type of thing.

The best thing to do is find a local custom wheel shop in your area. Not one of these chain car stores. They will take their time and do it right.
