yeah, it does look like the mechanic overcharged but it looks like it's some really good work for what that's worth. Some shops feel that they could charge pretty much whatever they want because they feel that the work is worth it. But the car came out really nice as a show car, not my cup of tea though. The car was repainted, a ton of interior mods, AND a turbo kit. If it all came out clean then $16k sounds about right for a shop though.

My bro use to work at audio extreme and they don't have the size shop to lock down cars as much so it's happened a couple times where people see their cars out front and steal it back instead of paying for it. Also, a good buddy of mine had that happen where his shop is at his house. He has all his paperwork and everything proving that he's a legit business but because he runs it out of his mansion of a house, people think they could take advantage of him. I said it earlier that someone on here did this. They charged up a bill of over $8k and stole the car back from his yard. My buddy took him to court but because the motor was swapped, and I guess you need some kind of DMV paperwork to do that to a car, the car stayed with the owner. I really wouldn't be surprised if this kid gets his car back. Some states pretty much are fucked up.

once the cost of the parts/labor exceeded the cost of the car, the shop should have stopped working on it and secured some sort of deposit before continuing...i hope the kid loses the car...but there's no way someone is gonna pay $16k for that car to cover the bill

There was a lot of fail happening on both sides there. Shop and the kid... Both fucking morons. I wouldn't do $16k worth of work without a decent down payment and I'd want proof of financing or ability to pay. IE: Give me a valid credit card number with enough to cover the cost.

Hey everyone, updates are as follows:

All paperwork has been filed with courthouse.

Registered letters of "Notice of Intent to File a Lien" have been mailed to Joe, his Mother Lisa, and the Credit Union.

Lawyer has been contacted

Where we are at right now is that our Lien will take 60 days to go through, at that time we will be able to petition the Credit Union for them to write-off the car as a total loss and sign the title to us, OR, pay the total amount owed PLUS 60 days of storage at $30 a day. That will be the almost $16,000 PLUS $1,800 storage. The storage fee will continue to accrue until a check or title is received.

So long story short, we will probably end up with the car. I doubt the credit union is going to cut a check for $18K+ for a car that they have financed for less than that.

As far as the BBQ, I'm going to start getting that organized over the next couple of days.

I need to know where you guys would prefer it. We can do it at Don Garlit's Museum here in Marion County OR we can do it down in/near Tampa. I would expect a better turn-out in Tampa but I am not aware of where these kinds of events are usually held down there and as such would need help securing a location.

Looks like the proper steps to get the car transfered to the shop's name. Also looks like Joe isn't getting his car back.
