these were the last details i caught "official" wind of (meaning leaked) from my sources in 2008...

Platform: modified FM platform (Z/G chassis)
Weight: ~3000lbs
Motor: MR turbo series (im guessing a stroked MR18 to MR20)
Price Point: $25,000-$28,000

the car was to be the same 2+2 setup the original S chassis was. the car was going to be a coupe (booo) and was supposed to resemble the G35 in a lot of ways. nissan was planning on releasing the car as both a nissan model and infiniti model. the car had been clayed (meaning there was an actual prototype made). no driveable model was built yet (as in, no track mule). the project was OFFICIALLY put on hold in late 2008 due to the downturn of the economy. nissan has decided that the car would be brought off the shelf should the FT86/GT86/BRZ/FRS take off. with current sales figures of the GT86/BRZ in japan (toyota and subaru are completely back ordered on all 2012 models currently), expect to hear something from nissans end within the next year.

the new S chassis will take roughly 4-5 years to hit the market, so dont get your hopes up for a 2013 or 2014 release. like i said, there was a clay model floating around nissans design lab in japan, that was it. there was no driveable model as the car was still being worked on. id say a production model was about 15-25% complete as far as suspension and chassis engineering went. but, IF nissan is getting off their ass, count on seeing a track mule within the next 2 years.

and the last name i heard the car being referred to as was the "SX". no numbers, just a letter designation. im sure this will change.

New cars no longer take 4-5 years to design and get to production. Current technology can get it down to 3years from a sheet of paper to start of production. A 2015 model is feasible, especially if they have 20% designed already.

fleet cars maybe, sports cars no...development time on them is 4-5 years. case in point, the GT86. toyota STARTED the car back in 07/08 and it is now 2012. sports cars take longer to develop now-a-days because the final product has to be worth the price attached to it.

Although I think it could be a little less because they are using the majority of an existing platform. The BRZ/86 was a ground-up design.

The chassis is all new. Some suspension parts were borrowed from the Impreza part bin, but they were extensively retuned.

4-5 years isn't always the case with sports cars, GM was bragging about the 1.5 years it took to redesign the C6 vette. And its a completely new car compared to the C5. Now compare that to the RX8 which reportedly took 6 years to design start to finish and you can see it all depends on which resources are at a companies disposal and how many of those resources they want to put towards a project. The real key here is if we want a new s-chassis to stay affordable, don't expect it to be done in a few years, the amount of devotion that would take would cause the price to skyrocket.

Different cars take different amounts of time to develop and get to the market. You can't just throw out blanket statements. If a car is derived from an existing platform, it can generally be brought to market more quickly than a vehicle on a brand new platform. But then there are cars like the Pontiac Solstice. It was introduced as a concept at the 2004 Detroit show, and started production in mid 2005.

As for the new 240, I've read before that Nissan had already started developing the car, but shelved it due to the recession. However, no mention was made of how far along the development process was. It could be 20% done, or it could be 80% done. Who knows?

So, $24,930 for FR-S 6 speed with destination, $25,495 for BRZ 6-speed with destination.

$555 for HIDs, navi, and Bluetooth, in addition to having a Subaru badge over Scion. I think the BRZ is the winner here...I could care less about navi and Bluetooth, but would probably spend the extra cash just for the BRZ looks, HIDs, and not owning a Scion.

Thoughts?

i'd pay the extra for HID's...considering a proper retrofit runs around 600-700 bucks with quality parts the extra $555 isn't bad. but i'm a sucker for the creature comforts lol.

Same here, oem hid's are always so much better then some aftermarket plug and play crap, and if they're bixenon then even better, those damn things are like daylight.

$25,495 is MSRP for the BRZ, it doesn't include destination.


There is a $1,305 difference between the FRS and the BRZ Premium after MSRP + Destination for both cars.

i would pay 1400 for hids and integrated navi.
the only thing is the difference isn't likely to be only 1,400-ish.

Last time I was at a Subaru dealership I couldn't find a Base/Premium WRX WITHOUT a ~$300 STI short shifter "upgrade"

They'll make bank off dealer installed options due to the exclusivity.

"Oh you put a deposit down on a Premium with no options?"

"Well, this is the one we got in for you.. It has paint protection, an alarm system, and upgraded rear view mirror."

"These options add $1,500, and if you pass we can't guarantee you'll get another one before this time next year."

Oops, looks like autoblog had a typo, they said that price included destination. At the new differential, I don't know that I'd spring for the Subaru. $1400 for comfort/convenience options and a cooler badge is tougher to swallow. Guess I'd have to check both out in person.

Finally got to see one the FT86 in person today, I gotta say I like it's size a lot. It's smaller than my FD, but somehow the interior looks big for the size of the car. I'm not crazy about the Altezza-ish taillights, but it definitely stands out in person. It's one of those cars you don't have to do much to make it look great. Suspension and nice wheels and I'd be effin' set.








Although price for price, stat for stat, I'm still torn between a black fully loaded BRZ (because if it's a daily, I want the damn amenities) and an '07+ 350Z with the rev up engine.
