Does a Japanese luxury car depreciate more than something else? Did I miss something?

Why yes, yes they do!

They depreciate faster then their economy cousins. Luxury cars in general depreciate damn fast. G35's are like $3,500 cars these days.

Buying new, you can't go wrong with a Wrangler, Tacoma or 4Runner.

So, what you're saying is that he should get a 370Z instead of the G37 because it won't depreciate as fast? I ask, because the OP asked about a coupe or hatch..which is why I recommended a coupe...and hatches....and not things that weren't coupe or hatches. And G35's that are like 3500 are private party with well over 100k clicks on the odo. Not that the G35 is really relevant to what i was saying as I only referenced in for sizing purposes. But, just so we're all on the same page.

Can confirm. Insurance adjuster, luxury cars depreciate really fast. Had a 2013 7 Series Bmw total in 2014 for 99K. Had a 2013 7 series BmW total in late 2015 for like 42K.

3's series can be had for 11-14k off msrp in only a few years.

My pops in law offer perspective on this. He said most people who want and can afford luxury cars don't want them used, so when they become used they basically get sold to people who could not afford them new, greatly reducing the sales price.

For instant in GA it black people (shut people I'm black too) love to snap up 5-7 Series BMW's once they get 2-4 years off the current year.

Case in point
2013
https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used...ting=131381373

2015
https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used...586_isFeatured
2016
https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=159193407

While of course option wise the cars may not be exact, still you can see the massive differences in price based on year.

Corbic, just curious - Is there a reason why when you mention newer daily drivers/trucks, you always talk about the Tacoma but never mention the Frontier... Why is that?

Just get a 1st gen IS300. They're cheap, bulletproof and comfortable.

live cheap and save money for multi-family income properties. Don't be the 99% that buy expensive, depreciating cars to satisfy a false perception that it's going to make your life better. Car payments suck. Plus, when your dog or friend pukes, shits or performs some other disgusting act in your car you won't be as mad because it's a cheap daily beater.

They are nice and fun to drive but they drink gas like an alcoholic.

My dad and brother have frontiers. Both have had issues that required dealer fixes. Both ride like crap. And both get worse gas mileage than my Silverado. And it has the 4.8(no cylinder deactivation), a 4 spd auto(not the 6), and a shorter rear gear(3.27 vs 3.08). Avg 16 mpg. 20 hwy if I leave the ac off. Not bad for something as aerodynamic as a cinder block.

Tacoma's have their problems, too (like any other car), but resale value is insane.

Made $3k back in equity when I traded out of my previous Tacoma and into my current one. Already in a position of equity in my current truck as well.

Holy crap, I had no idea it was that bad. And are you guys talking about the D40 Frontier with the VQ40 engine? Geez.

If so, I guess I'll just get an F150 or some chevy truck.

My brother's was a d22, and my dad's is a d40. Both v6, no clue on engine code.

The VQ40DE, basically the vq35de with .5 more displacement. I knew the vq line was pretty flawed but i didn't know the frontier caught the big that damn bad.

370z hands down. I have had three 240's, a miata, a g35, and I have never been happier with how a car handles and performs, looks and feels, for the price.
