Are you guys using galvanized sheet metal? I was thinking of using 16 ga galvanized sheet metal for the surrounding parts of the tubs. My tubs are 16 ga btw.

That's exactly what I asked for when I went to one of my local suppliers, he said all they carried was galvanized. It looked fine but I'd rather get input from you guys before pullin the trigger. I'll be trying to source some plain sheet metal...

Eventually i had to ditch the hks filter because it wouldnt fit under a hood with my tubs :/

Though there's research that boasts of its safety, I still don't trust to weld galvanized steel and inhaling a bunch of zinc oxide fumes.

Sure, but why spend the money on galvanized then? Unless you get it for the same price as steel. Also, the propensity to make the job look shitty is higher by grinding anything. Considering you should paint it regardless, might as well just go with plain ole sheet metal.

As for galvanized I would stay away, it costs more and as mentioned involves harmful fumes. Another thing to note is painting it can be...funky

I work in a large scale fabrication facility, and have inhaled zinc oxide fumes accidentally before.

Trust me, regardless of if it's bad for your health or not, it's not a fun experience.

Ya, I'm a chemist so I know all about it

I think the claims are if you're using a MIG welder, the shielding gas 'should' blow away most of the particulate.... but something about breathing in fine powder makes me think of it as silica and relate it to silicosis.

From what I was told you're able to clean it with household vinegar and primer it to be able to paint it.

Does anyone have pics of how much you actually need to cut out before the install of tubs? Do you need to cut into your strut tower at all?

Depends how you want to do it really. I took the harder route and cut it pretty much all out, making my own panels and allowing more room height and width wise.

But yes, you need to cut into your strut tower at some point.

You will need to cut into the towers some. I did my final cutting after I had tacked in the arches. Mine is a little unlevel but IDGAF

It did for a few months. It wasn't me who started the welding on the drivers side arch, it was my friend who, unbeknownst to me, was high at the time. In the end, it's not a show car so I got over it. Needless to say, I've not let him help me with anything since.

im not done my tubs are in now and im gonna cut out more

Go to tractor supply; I would call them semi pre-fabbed. They have an arch plus the drop already tacked on. If you cut carefully, that's all you would need.
