As you said, it could be 3 years old...so the guy still has 2 years of $500 a month payments left on a car that could have been worth $17k that's now worth scrap.

You know how I know that BRZ owner is a broke moron? Logical deduction. If he was rich he would not be driving that wreck to work. He'd would either have it repaired/replaced or it would be regulated to being a track toy. He would only that takes to events on a trailer, pulled by his Diesel bro truck.

That's how I know he was a dumbass that bought/leased a BRZ saw a drift event, went to show off and plowed it into a wall.

Also there is no cage to any sanctioning event would not have allowed him to "diw" by driving with moron who plows into people.

Personally I would not drive a car without guards and front bar. Recently I damaged guards severely at a track day. Took my car off the road until new guards arrived and repaired it properly. It's not rocket science.
In fact I wasn't even allowed back out on the track without them. It's crazy what you guys get away with on street cars in US.
