That sir is one hell of a good looking cage. You use JMR dimples ?

It all depends on what kind of DOM you get i guess. I only use USA DOM and its always brown the indonisia shit is silver but i hate using it. I clean the ends with a wire wheel just for a better weld. Even though i mig welded this cage i cary most my TIG welding techniques over.

Yeah, its just weird, all the DOM comes all greasy and dark grey/black but I take it off with alcohol and a scotchbrite red pretty easy. that stuff seems almost like a lacquer paint. What are you guys paying for DOM? Its 4.80 bulk 100+ft price in Austin, but 3.80 a foot just being some shmo in Houston. |

I pay $2.88 per ft if i order more then 100ft. I just placed an order for 160ft of 1.5'' .120 wall and it was $460.80 and its USA DOM i refuse to use the indonesia shit. The carbon make up is diff and i get all my dom certified. here is the flickr i made for the car Flickr: Andrewfd3s' Photostream this is the finished product did everything i could before returning the car 250miles away ![]()

I also am wondering why you used trigger welding on such important parts of the cage, my guess is that xraying those joints you'll see poor penetration. Its a lot better to run a single bead and if possible all the way around the joint. Wouldn't put my life on line in that cage. There is no argument to this topic either, there is no physical way to put enough heat and penetration on that joint with that method

From the photos I see, only thing tacked in is the plates which doesnt need to be a complete weld all the way around, just good strong stitches to stiffen the car.

Good weld, good penetration ![]() Poor weld, lack of penetration on thicker metal ![]() If you weld you will see that when you start a bead, the heat transfer is less at the beginning of the weld then within the next 2-3 sweeps you do, that is what essentially is happening when you trigger weld, lack of heat on thicker metals like .120 wall dom gives poor pentration Case in point, these are trigger welds. I usually would not blast anyone on this forum, but when people are building cages to save peoples lives in an event of a crash, i feel the need to point things out. ![]() |

Thanks for specifying it. I didnt look at the images in full view or in detail, just looked at them them from regular view. Thought he meant tack welds like the ones used for holding parts together every 4 inches
