pimp light!
*opens door* blinds everyone in the car permanently!

but in reality whenever I need the light I switch it on, it's usually in the off position.

I gotta do something up like that too!

anyway, it's fairly easy, you just have to be somewhat adept at soldering.

no picture write up yet (or even ever), still in school. Just got my medical assessment down for midterms on thursday. OPQRST, DCAP-BTLS, SAMPLE and PRBELLS are what i'm gong to be tested on, simple stuff.

if you guys really wanna make it, you can get the kennan driver and your choice of emitters (cree or seoul) from kaidomain

http://kaidomain.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductId=1640 is the driver that runs them at ~750ma, up to three emitters

or dealextreme:

DealExtreme: $2.53 MR16 1*3W 320~350mA Constant Current Regulated LED Driver (12~16V Input)
that's a driver you can run up to two emitters on @ ~650ma per emitter, or three at 540ma per,

costwise it's not that $ if you DIY, but the work is in the labor.

if that's too bright, you can always run one single emitter for 1/2 the brightness, it's still ~200 lumens which is plenty for a dome light. s13's can run this for their maplights as well. if you wire a multimode board in parallel (I think) with the 12v buck driver and combine that with a heatsink, you can have a three stage maplight (low, medium and high)

For quick reference:

Cree Q5 = ~270 lumens @ 1000mA (1amp)
Seoul U bin = ~240 lumens @ 1000mA
Seoul U2 bins go up to 280 lumens at one amp but they're like $10 per emitter
the lower the drive current, usually the more efficient the emitter is, it's most efficient at 350ma IIRC.

q5 @ 350ma = 107-114 lumens
u bin @ 350 = ~100
u2 bin @ 350 = 100-118

U bins are the easiest, the legs stick out and are easily soldered. if you order from a vendor on candlepowerforums you can choose a color bin as well, if you want a warmer white with a better CRI (similar to incandescent) or cooler white.

I wired the emitters in series and potted the board with thermal epoxy. All this attached to a 1" square by 1/2" thick AL heatsink clamped down. Copper would have better heat dissapation but I'm to busy to find it locally.

I might make these after my schedule clears up some

Not to mention that work doesn't assign anything.

School requires homework , reading, studying, etc. It's not easy work.

And yes, the Autobac dome lights were a disappointment. Better than stock, but not worth $40.

I have the LED dome light by Luxor, its some mad tyte JDM stuff:

LED Dome Light

But they are pretty pricey. I picked up both the dome and map light from some guy on Nico, it was a pretty decent price at the time. They are bright as hell and are very helpful at night when your in your car especially in bufu places without street lights. Anyways its basically a little board full of LEDs cut to fit in the location, it has two wires running to a little bulb shaped connector that plugs into the place of the normal bulb.

I was thinking it should be fairly cheap and easy to make. Ill have to try this writeup to see if it works on my S13.

superflux LEDs are good to use as well, like fueled by hate's domelight. not that much heat to deal with.

anyway, finalizing it now, I'm taking one emitter out for more practical use

Looks a lot like my prototype dome light... it was blindingly bright... but I decided to get crazy and overdrive it and caught the board on fire. Whoops. lol.

That's dope. When EMT class is done, start slanging them. EMT's only make $8 an hour. ...it's a lot of work to make minimum wage these days!

No bonus. There is overtime sometimes if a call runs over but it's only time and a half. $12 an hour bitches! Ha! Well EMT's only give oxygen and transport. But paramedics are the ones that save lives... and their pay usually starts at $10 an hour! I make about $16 an hour at my retail job now and my pay is going to be cut in half once I get my EMT on.
I can't wait.
