I don't listen to a lot of Malian music but Vieux Farka Toure's Les Racines was recommended to me and I'm really enjoying it playing in the background while I work.

Are you judging rap based on the beats or the lyrical ability of the artist? I would agree rap has a lot more high hats now as well as well as the punchy bass lines that fade into the wavy (think of sound wave graph) bass, but one cannot deny there are still artists out there trying to spit.
