It actually started in California, just like every other terrible car fad. All you have to do is browse pictures on here from the early to mid-2000s. The cancer just spreads to the rest of the country later.

At least Earl was pretty much the second person ever to wrap his car in that sparkly vinyl junk. He copied chmercer who did it first as a joke.
I think Earl's new RX7 is supposed to be kind of a silly homage to his original FC. Though it would look amazing with regular paint.
