Really? So you run no preload to slam your car? How does that affect your drifting efforts? Wait, IIRC you only have 200whp and you run 18x12 wheels out back? LOL how do you even drift??? Your car must handle pretty lame.

"preload doesnt raise your car... it raises your spring rates. the strut can only go so far up."

NO

preloading does not raise your spring rate
preloading does not lower your car
drooping the spring lowers your car

preload shifts weight; increasing preload in the front shifts weight to the rear (by lifting the front of the car) and also alters your shock travel.

stop using "hmm this sounds right because i looked at my suspension for 5 minutes" logic and start learning how things actually work.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????

dude how stupid can you fucking be

heres how you lower a car

front

remove all except 1 spring perch
thread bracket until it touches the bottom of the spring perch (NO PRELOAD)
done, this is the max lowness you can acchieve with s chassis front suspension

rear

bottom out the shock bracket
droop the spring down the shock body as far as you want, keeping in mind that you loose shock travel when doing so (NO PRELOAD)
done, this is the max lowness you can acchieve with s chassis rear

if you do anything else than this, your car is not as low as it could be

for the rest of your questions -

my car handles awesome, because i know how to set it up, i have full shock travel in the front and rear (never hit the bumpstops)

i dont know how much power i have? ive never been on a dyno and dont plan on being on one soon. yes i drift on 18x12 rear wheels?

and as for how i drift - i know how to drive

Wait doesnt it also depends on wut coilovers you have??? Some coilovers you can adjust the ride height seperately without messing around with the spring perch. I know some Teins, you can only lower the car by lowering the spring perch. Your lowering the car but your effectively changing the shock travel too.

"When you move the spring perch upwards, you are compressing the spring. As the spring compresses, it exerts a force on the upper mount of the coilover. So when the weight of the car is placed on the upper mount, the weight would have to overcome the spring tension in order to compress the spring any further. Placing the spring under tension is called "pre-loading" the spring."

Straight from spl

Moving the spring perch upwards (preloading) raises the ride height, moving the spring perch down lowers the ride height

Thankyoucomeagain

yeah crappy single height adjustable coilovers you have to droop the spring to lower them at all

with most coilovers nowadays you can lower the car a good deal by changing the mounting point of the shock, before you have to start drooping the spring and sacrificing shock travel.

ok... IMO drooping the spring is stupid, you dont lower the spring to lower your car, your shocks will probably blow significantly sooner. people lower the spring becasue they have maxed out their coilovers and thats the only way they can lower their car more.

preload raises your car, simply put.. for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is Newtons 3rd law

as you compress the spring more, it will exert a force on the shock, that added force will raise up the car since the same force as before (mass of car and gravity) will still be exerted on the shock.

there done and done.. stop arguing, keep this a picture thread on how low can you go

btw usdmsiliva... stop spitting out all this crap when you definatly do not know physics.

usdmsilvia: You are basing your suggestions off of a single damper with zero weight attached.

We are all talking about adjusting your car in real life situations ie, on the car.

Raising the spring collar up raises the bottom of the spring up, and with nowhere for the top to go, it is compressed. I hope you remember what happens when you push down on a spring, but just incase, I'll refresh your memory. The spring rate goes up.

And being as how the spring rate goes up, it's force pushes outward, and that outward force raises the car.

Changing preload, is a way you can adjust and account for droop and ride height settings.

usdmsilvia: Go cut off your own head and throw it in the garbage.

You, sir, are useless.

Think about it... when the pre loaded spring pushes up on the upper mount, there is no "visual" change in "ride height" when the car is jacked up and the suspension and shock is at full droop. Once it gets lowered off the jack and the vehicle is sitting on the ground, the ride height WILL BE HIGHER (assuming you left the lower height adjusting brackets untouched). It will take more force to compress the spring, and since the effect of gravity will compress an unloaded spring more than the preloded one, the sprung weight (the fucking car) will sit lower with no preload. AND THUSLY, HIGER WITH PRELOAD.

God.

Die.

What is that? The 9th time its been explained to you? Damn.

wsup yea i changed it up over the winter months.
its got a 5mm spacer on there now and my only other spacers are 20mm bolt on. i dont think i'll be able to fit those on without new fenders. i might go up to a 235/40 up front to till it up a bit since it looks quite sunk to me up front.

Almost all street use coilovers were designed to adjust ride height by adjusting preload just a couple years ago.

Clearly mr usdmsilvia has been misinformed.
