You only need insurance to drive your licensed car on public roads. If you buy a shell, it sure as hell won't be licensed, street legal, or even have an engine. Once you get it driveable and street legal then you get the plates and put insurance on it

Hell yea. I think it would be fun to start out with a shell. I woulda found one if i didn't find a MINT ass '89 that was totally stock.

If you find a shell in the midwest that ur gonna trailer home then come buy my KA24E from me!! It will get u on the road till ya get your SR, RB, CA, KADE, or hell you could turbo the KAE. I'll hook u up cheap. lol, enough promoting of my shit.

Do some soul searching and figure out what you REALLY want, that way you can build it up and keep it for a LONG time. I plan on keeping my S13 till i get too old to drive and/or crash it

well my first car/truck was a 87 s10 woooo

if you want a 240 get one just learn how to drive first

dont be a fucking dumb kid and think you are all d1

just fucking drive the car

if you want to get crazy take it to a track so you wont kill yourself or someone else

its your money but you still live with your parents so what they say go's respect them

have fun

If you plan to drive it...

I'm pretty responsible and a 240 was my first car and I totaled it. That was an S14 in really nice shape though, not some beater S13, and I regretted not spending my money on something crappier the first time around.

your anti-beater argument should be that a 500 p.o.s. car is going to cost you more in maintainence and last less years than a decent 3k or so car

i d.d'ed my $3000 s13 for 4 years when the car was 12-16 years old at the time... had i gotten a $500 p.o.s., i would have gone through tons of shit cars w/ no resale value.

a car worth keeping is going to cost you less in the long-run than a cheap shit box thats about to die.

that damn s13 could still sell for 1700 bucks right now... freakin 6 years after i bought it, try that with a junky $800 chevy lumina or mercury topez

Get a really shitty car at first and let it leak all over the driveway and garage.
Work on it like hell and it still is P.O.S. eventually your parents will feel sorry for you.
Then take them to go look at a good condition 240sx.
Be like "If you get me this, I'll sell the POS at home."

Hey, worked for me. lol

i crashed my first s13 when i just bought it in 2 weeks. then crashed again some idiot hit me. then again some idiot decided to slam on the brakes. then another idiot "i know him" backed up and hit my car again. so i got a new one. again.

but enough of the small talk have fun get one and trust me if its your money they cant say shiit after you get it. i did what you did bought my car on my own without my parents consent when i was a kid. then they couldnt say after i bought it.

the only problem is that he's not 18 yet, so legally he can't sign the title or actually register the thing......but i suppose you could pay someone cash, get them to transfer the title, and come home with car and make daddy sign it lol

true that. the thing is that this law about buying a car when youre still underage is bullshiit. but the law is the law. its still bullshiit.

through a private seller a 16 y/o can sign a title in his name, thats not the case though at dealerships/ used cars sales.

Ditto. I was just about to post something along those lines.

Buying the car and telling your parents to deal with it is a quick way to get your ass thrown out of the house- not a wise move IMO.

OP- try to reason with your parents. Since you're using your own money, but your parents want safety, you could try asking them to put up some "airbag" money and get an S14 with the extra cash. Not sure if that'd work, but it's worth a shot unless you want to pay 100% on your own, as I did.

for now just get a sentra or corolla. if you join the service then just save your $$$ and get the 240sx then. you will have lots of $$ when you come back from going to iraq, as there isn't much to spend $$ on there!

I have gotta say that it sucks to be male, under 25, and have a sport coupe in terms of insurance.

As much as I love my 240, get a nice, early 2000 sedan (mine was a 2000 mazda 626) with a stick that gets 27/32 millage and enjoy the slightly lower insurance. I would highly reccomend that you find something stick, though, as it will be good practice for the 240 if you eventually end up with one (as I did )

or you could be lucky and in college in a city like austin where you dont need a car by the time you get the 240 and legally insured as an occasional driver of the 240 .

And you know what doesn't suck? Being 25, male, in the Army, not getting tickets, and only paying $35 a month for insurance (includes renters insurance).

Booyah, sucka!

That's one of the most worthless posts I've seen in a while.

I say IF, IF you could convince them to buy a 240sx, make sure it's in DAMN NEAR MINT condition (which is rare...good luck with that one).

But as stated, S13's can become money pits. Seriously.

yea 240s dont really get good gas mileage but they do have good crash ratings. especially the s13's but if you want something fast and save you best of with turbo volvos or saabs. They make insane numbers for their size. my first car was an 86 740gle wagon non turbo. it made 114hp and 138ft lbs or torque but when you took it out onto a stright it liked to haul ass. only downside was the 17/21 mpg which is why i got the 240. 19/24mpg. i really wouldnt recommend the 240 for beginners more like intermiddiates. the brskes especially on non abs s13's like to lock up, the hate traction in wet weather and the torque bands can get you into some trouble

Also, I got a discount due to automatic seatbelts...lol

If anything, show/tell the insurance company about the auto seatbelts then do a manual seatbelt conversion if you'd like. :P

The answer is get a VOLVO! Parents love them because of it being a really safe car. Insurance wont be to bad since its a volvo and Cops wont be on your ass because your driving your moms car. They come turbo charged and theres enough room in the engine bay to fit a v12. You can also fit a shitload of crap in the trunk. Enough said.

I had a 240 as my first car (my old hatch) I didn't do stupid shit but I did get in a minor fender bender by following too close, you live and you learn. Also, I would actually wait until you turn 18 for the fact that you will get pulled over and then you don't have to ask your parents to go to court with you. I always felt bad asking my mom to come to court with me for a ticket as stupid as exhaust when I was a minor. Just a suggestion.

Some kind of civic is surely a good first car, as the support is great and they're quick enough with swaps, but the ricer tax on everything OEM is ridiculous.

B13 Sentras are neat, I was tempted to get one when I was replacing my first S14, but by that time I was doing some track events and the driving dynamics of FWD just didn't appeal to me. B13 Sentra SE-R would be fun even stock, and you could swap an SR20VE later on for way less than the equivalent Honda setup (K20? B20 VTEC? somewhere in between those two I'd imagine) would cost. They're just a bit hard to find in good shape.

you wont total it if you dont want to..
just dont do stupid shit..thats all it comes down to
dont drink and drive
be careful
be mature

just drive normal..dont show off

being a good driver has nothing to do with age..ive seen 15yr old kids that can drive better than some 30yr olds..only difference there is experience..not maturity.

you'll be fine
