my previous car was a turbo'd 1990 miata (lightest year they were made). i now own an SR'd 240. comparing the two is really hard to do, i like the power of the SR engine, but the miata was definitely more fun to drive.

i had AGX's/eibachs for suspension duty, greddy turbo/starion fmic, link ECU w/knock sensing, 2.5" exhaust from greddy dp back, Enthuza turbo catback, and a few other random things done to it for supporting mods. it dynoed 187rwhp and 179lb/ft of tourque@ 12psi with the little greddy/mitsu TD04 15G turbo. but, the car only weighed around 2300lbs so with that power level it still screamed. if i were to do it over again i would get a 94 model with the 1.8 motor and Torsen LSD and do my own turbo setup. all around it was a great car though, and i miss it a whole lot. i never got the gay car comments except when i first bought it completely stock. you MUST get a rollbar or the car does look a little fruity with the top down, plus the rollbar stiffens the car up a hell of a lot. mine had cooling problems so i sold out for a 240sx.

not sure if these will work but we'll see:

SR motor set/clip $2500+, FMIC kit $700+, Downpipe $100+, 3" exhaust $500+, Misc install parts $100+, Shop labor for install $1000+ and you still only make 220rwhp for $5000
so what's so CHEAP about the SR swap again?

^^^ That is my plan. However, I paid $3100 + taxes for my 240sx. I looked up the trade in value for it, and it looks like a 170,000mile 5 speed LE in great condition (plus spoiler rust and torn seats) goes for $740. I laughed when I saw that. At best, I can expect $1600 for private party sales. Screw that.

I was hoping to get $2500, plus about $1000 of my own cash for a total of $3500 for the miata. Than about $1500 for the turbo kit and a tuneup.

I guess I may have to get the cheapest POS miata I can find, leave it stock, and drive it in the summer and the 240sx in the winter. Damnit.

I'm still gonna test drive the ones I was looking at and see what I can get for my S13....

i say keep it. miatas are nice cars and can be modded to be insanely rad but it will never be a 240. they're two totally different animals despite how similar they may seem.

if you like the miata better then go for it, you could die tomorrow, as someone already pointed out. just remember that 240's die all the time and the population ain't exactly bein replenished. i've looked all over and the best overall performance bang for the buck is the 240.

Since the RWD variation was never sold in the US, it is illegal to swap into 240's and such for street use... But swapping them into smog exempt cars (510, 1500, 1600, 2000 Roadsters, etc) are an exception.

Then have the best of both worlds, take the miata engine out and replace it with an SR20. That'd be one bad a$$ little toy.

I don't know of anyone who has done this yet but I'm sure it's gone across a few minds before.

Now my brother has a hot miata which when i get my pics back up i'll post it. There are plently of mods for the miata and boy this thing can stop. i mean STOP!!! my brother is part of the Big Apple Miata club of NY. (if you go to there website you can see his car in the spring dustoff pic section he has the only white one, but now its lower by an 1,1/2") they go on some crazy trips but my brothers car def. gets the most looks. His friend has a turbo miata and he has just lifter rail protectors in the 1.8L and he is running 18lbs of boost through it( no joke but the mazda engines do have some potential). he can beat a 700cc street bike off the line and keep with it. its crazy fast and the handling of this car you can't compare. But in all respects to the 240sx, keep it!!! everyone wants a 240, not a MIATA!

I have a friend with a miata, and aside from the lack of power, that car handels like nothing else. His is a `91 with a 1.6, and the only mods to it are flyin` miata rear frame brace, and front strut bar, racing beat front frame brace, hard dog double diagnol roll bar, ground control coil overs on KYB AGX shocks.

this thread has gone to "about a gay man's car" to being just plain "gay"

I had a 91 FM turboI miata before my S13 that i eventually went SR in. The 240 is much more easier and pleasurable to drive. More capable in almost everyway in my opinion. But the miata still had a/c, was incredibly tossable and turned head like no other. I also like being able to eat fast food and such in my car, I reconmend saving for an SR unless u wanna keep it smog legal and size isnt an issue then gofor the miata.
Here was mine...
