According to people that supposedly know the guy that owns the car, he didn't even buy the tires from discount tire. He went in and bought only the lugs.

On some forum a guy was saying they sold him (dude with the rx7) the wrong size lug nuts because they did not thread on to the studs enough. Im assuming they were the correct diameter and thread pitch..? Which means they were indeed the right size lugs. Dude just needed extended studs.

And being as how I work at discount tire, it is very unlikely they sold him the "wrong size lug nuts"

There is a minimum amount of turns a lug or bolt has to make in/on the threads in order to hold its clamping load.

Guess he learned his lesson.

Please note I said he blamed them.

I find it hard to imagine he made it from install, to the track, to his hot lap without the wheels falling off had they been installed wrong.

I've seen this before in person back in 2007. At a DI event a guy lost a wheel and it bounced along almost hitting my car.

He had been changing out wheels and forgot to torque that one down.
