Just wondering what people think the limit is on stock axles?

I am at 460rwhp on pump gas, Z32 trans, one piece driveline, KAAZ 1.5 LSD in an S14 diff, all SPL suspension, 275/40/17 Nitto NT05s.

Would I be at a big risk of breaking an axle if I hit the drag strip? That's probably the weakest link in the drivetrain I think, other than the softer 2nd and 4th gear synchros in my early Z32 trans.

I've ran at the strip on DR's pulling 1.9's(first time on DR's) and didn't have an issue. 2step and unpreloaded drivetrain could wreak havoc though.

I would be impressed if you could break an axle with that big of a wheel.

I would use bias slicks over dr's. they soak up way more shock than you would think.

at 315whp on a break in tune, with a z32 trans, os giken 1.5 differential, every suspension/bushing you can think of I snapped an axle letting the clutch out at 5500.... had the synchros replaced while that was fixed too. also was on 275/40/17 bfg radials

I'm at 501whp now and will /not/ launch the car because I don't think I'll be getting home without a tow

Am not planning to stay stock. neither to set a record. just experimenting. Just trying to have fun u know. . Besides that traction control sounds expensive

hou can do it with the aem to a point, add a front wheel abs sensor and use that as your speed , that way the boost dont ramp up with tire spin it help a lot

in a more expensive system you can run front and rear wheel speed sensors and have the ecu or traction box pull boost and timing at certin slip rates

out of curiosity, what does anyone use for driving on the street, other than drag radials? Being in Washington state, daily driving, a drag radial isn't going to do well in the rain. However, I am sick of driving with no traction when boost hits. It seems that 315/35/17 Nitto NT05 is going to be the best of all worlds. I wouldn't mind going to 335/30/18 but they are 3x the cost of a 315/35/17 setup if you include the costs for both wheels and tires.

if I wasn't using radials I'd be using either falken 615s or bfg kdws

I had falken 615s and they wouldn't hook for nothing. I still have them on the front and they are nearly as bad as the crappy Sumitomos. KDWs are twice the cost of Nittos and not twice the grip. I am not poor, but I don't want to throw away money on tires if there isn't an upside to the spend.

^^At your power level, there is really no 'end all be all' tire for you dude... Either route you go, you will be sacrificing either traction in the dry or traction in the wet. I'm assuming your wheels are 10J? If so, maybe go down to a 265 or 275/40/17 all-weather tire. I daily drove on 275/40/17 drag radials in Okinawa & hated it in the rain w/only 350-ish at the wheels at the time. I still run them on my 240 with much more power at the wheels; but I have the luxury of not having to DD it.

If you do happen to find a good tire that hooks in the dry and holds well in the rain in boost, please let us know.

GL!
