The leaks are being reported by pretty reputable auto publications, fwiw.

Man, if it happens... 35K base (though I am sure they will up charge for manual)...

I think it’s absolutely the best value sport car on the market. Power to potential to style, really hard to beat.

the price point and sub 3,300lb weight dont seem plausible to me either. Hope I’m wrong. Would like to see the mustang and camaro 1le have another strong competitor

I really wouldn't be surprised by that price, because the base 2020 370Z M/T starts at $30,090 MSRP.

To put it more into prospective... The Lincoln MKZ "Reserve" comes standard with a 2.0L EcoBoost that makes 245hp/ 275tq and has a MSRP of $40,890. For only $3,000 more you can upgrade to the 3.0L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost that makes 400hp/ 400tq.

Also, I'm curious what Brembo brakes you end up getting for $5K. For $7,400 you can get a complete F&R 2pc Brembo GT BBK. Might be better off saving the $5K-$10K and just going with aftermarket brake, wheel and suspension upgrades.

Current Z is $30,090 msrp so they cannot price it too high. Plus the pony cars are a real challenge. This is a niche market. Most buyers are not shopping for a two seat coupe. The pony cars at least have 4 technical seats no matter how useable they may or may not be.

Add in the fact even at 400 crank HP the z is still out gunned by the pony cars. Enthusiasts know weight matters and the fact the VR30 can be boosted to 450WHP with ease, but Johnny/Jane buy a cute little sports car does not.

yeah but to be fair the 370z has pretty much stayed a similar price for the last 2 decades probably and very much an exception to the norm. the car is probably cheaper today when you factor in inflation.

even the relatively static sti has gone from I think 31-32k when I got mine in 06 to I think 38-42 today, and that is likely the more modest end of price hikes. An increase of 4k from the 370z to 400z plus weight reduction sounds too good to be true.

to me, 40-50k range would be more plausible. even the 370z nismo is like 45k although not sure who buys that.

Isn't this new chassis (from what I've gathered) still mainly the 370Z, but with just a new body/ interior? The VR30DDTT is something Nissan has been making since 2016 and I wouldn't be surprised if they end up using the same 370Z 6spd M/T.

That sure seems to me like they could get away with only charging $5K more for the new body, interior and VR30DDTT. Also, I'm pretty sure the complete hatch on the 350/ 370Z was over 100lbs, so maybe they were able to shed weight there?

Yes the current thoughts are it is a modified FM platform.

Hiroshi Tamura, the Chief Product Specialist for GT-R and NISMO, was ready to admit when talking about the Proto Z that not everything is new under the skin. "We don?t have many platforms [at Nissan]," he said. "The Z platform is already existing, but we have to modify the existing platform [because] power and torque is quite different."

It makes sense from a cost perspective. Retool what you got with new sheet metal and interior to keep costs down instead of developing all new stuff at a super high cost which Nissan cannot afford to do especially on such a niche likely to be low volume vehicle.

makes sense. same strategy seems to work well enough for for the dodge charger/challenger. If it has a better automatic transmission, should help with sales. hope it gets to keep hydraulic steering.

This article is interesting but the guy runs on a lot of speculation and gets a few things wrong, its not going to be called a 400Z and that has already been said by the Nissan guys in the Proto show off. Also they call the Supra all new . LOL The Supra is a BMW Z4 chassis ya its tuned to Toyota?s specs but its not new .

Anyways as far as tomorrow goes maybe its true Toyota and Suburu are gonna make a hot hatch but thats a head scratcher in and off itself.

Looks like dorki might be right... It seems to just be the GR86. At least the front bumper looks better than the BRZ.

Probably trying to copy Euro designs...

Still would've been a nice modern Spec-R successor if turbo:

keep it simple, stupid. Be nice if they get rid of those fake ducts too and that funky looking sill panel/skirt. You can get the new "supra" for all those useless extras, this is an ae86 successor after all.

I think the ducts are real just like on the BRZ. Also, I'm sure a lip kit will make that side skirt look better. A WRX/ STI, or S2000 style strake could work too.

I like it overall. it's a nicer front end than the BRZ. As long as it's not G80 M3 levels visually offensive I'm grateful cars like this even exist.

also quite confident the aftermarket should sort a lot of the issues out, not unlike the current gen 86.

The rear, in addition to looking like a Civic, also looks like what happens when you put your thumb on your nose and push up.

The GR Yaris is an ugly, ugly car. This should share approximately none of the looks. The profile view is alright until you hit the rear and then the sudden and jarring downward diagonal is crude and disjointed. It's like it's trying to be both angular and voluptuous. If you guys like this design philosophy, more power to you, but it's not my jam.

That's a nondescript fucking blob, with a mishmash of everyone else's obnixiously non-offensive design language.

On the highway at speed, you'd never know or care what car you just saw - maybe some bit of fiat-chrysler-fuckery? A honda? a toyota? a kia? A sports car? a hypermileing econobox with a "my other car is a bong" bumper sticker?

I can agree with you about "chrysler fuckery" - that's hopeless but believe me everybody will notice this car at speed on the highway when lowered and with better wheels setup.

I actually prefer it in white. The red looks great too, but I'd personally go white.

Toyota/ Subaru OEM modern wheels all look shit (imo). I can't wait to get rid of my STI's OEM Enkei's.

Also, I already said it looks better than the BRZ... The BRZ teardrop ducts are atrocious.

The wheels are ok-ish. the previous gen wheels are probably the worst OEM wheels out there in recent history so anything is an improvement.
