My steering wheel shakes at around 50 mph but the car drives straight when not handling the steering wheel. I think the issue might be with the steering column. I read someone had a similar issue and they replaced a spring somewhere and things worked out, but they skimped on the details.

Im wondering if anyone would be able to chime in on this

Noob question: I'm interested in a set of 3-piece wheels but admittedly am unfamiliar with relipping/rebarreling them. I understand finding lips for more common wheels like Equips and VSXX can be bought easily, but how does it work for less common ones? Are lips more universal than I'm led to believe or do they need to be matched to the wheel?

@corbic

Thank you!

Looks like a tough job though. Any way of approaching it without having to fully remove the steering column?

worn out front lower control arm bushings + ball joints and worn out tie rod + tie rod ends. also, might need to rebalance your front tires

Pull the engine? lol

You can verify if the bushing is toast by rocking the wheel when the car is off. If there is a lot of slop or play, it's hamburger.

I've read S14s don't have this bushing, but never having owned one, I can't confirm.

All those things will certainly cause vibration and play, however they should also cause the car to wander while driving.

From his discretion, I'm imagining he can take his hand off the wheel while driving, the car will maintain a straight corse, but the wheel will shimmy back and forth.

If the steering bushing is toast he'll have a dead spot when turning the wheel.

@Corbic, Youre correct, car drives straight but wheel shimmies. What do you mean by "dead spot"?

nope! my car drove perfectly straight after alignment and balancing, steering wheel still wobbled at various speeds. wound up installing brand new OE lower control arms + bushings + ball joints and brand new Tein tie rods + ends... both of these eliminated all steering slop and shaking/vibrations.

im not denying that your steering column bushing needs replacing (EVERY bushing on an S-Chassis needs to be replaced now due to age), but bad/sloppy ball joints and LCA bushings can cause all sorts of annoying driving issues including what you described.

is there a procedure to measuring timing chain stretch on ka24de? I couldn't find anything in my searches

is it also required/good practice to replace the timing chain sprockets (cam and crank) and idler gear when doing a chain replacement? (i noticed most kits, even oem, do not include the gears. however they are sold separately)

I mean... It would theoretically work out if you also had kouki headlights and fenders . I don't know why you would need to know or do this if you still have pop ups
