The higher alcohol content actually adds flavor imo.
Red wines have a similar effect (some ppl actually consider this to be 'cheating' for whatever reason). Besides, it's not like you'd get drunk off a 12oz beer. 9% is actually pretty common though. The higher alchohol content beers are closer to 12%. |

The only issue i have with big ABV beers, is their 'warmth' (or booze content). If a beer can mask it's ABV, awesome....typicallly I like when most companies do this.
BUT there are also exceptions: Goose Island Bourbon County Stout is a HUGE beer...but flavorful.

They're typically used for sparkling and/or dessert wines to have after dinner or w/ desserts. I'm actually skeptical it would work at all as a beer, & would think it to be over-kill. It may work ok if you pair it with seafood or fried chicken though. I noticed some beers are grotesque by themselves, but effective ONLY IF paired with the right foodstuffs (as opposed to being versatile) Muscat Wine (love this stuff) ![]() Quote:

I hated this beer when i tried it last year, worst part is they put it in with the pumpkin ale class. I want to try it again soon, Ive had alot of beer in the past year and my taste buds have sort of changed.

Yeah Im not a huge fan of blue moon, I like the rising moon and love the Honeymoon but Im not really down with so much of the Nutmeg/spices flavor that both golden wheat and blue moon have.

tried some more stuff recently
Delerium Tremens (possibly the most awesome name for any alchohol period) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/180/1385 Very fuity wine that has strong hints of apricot, banana, and nuts. Very accessible beer that non-beer drinkers might appreciate. ![]() Frankiskaner Hefe (wheat beer) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/142/1946 Another very solid wheat beer. Very smoothe and some complexity Reasonalbly priced at Trader Joe's for around $8 for 6, 12oz bottles. Got myself 24 bottles, cause it's so easy to drink & pair with just about anything. Again, also really accessible to even non-beer drinkers. ![]() Thanks very much to the poster who recommended Unibroue's 'La Fin Du Monde' I really enjoyed it with seafood. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/34 ![]() The Don De Dieu isn't too bad either, although not quite as enjoyable as Unibroue's Maudite & Fin Du Monde Got myself 26 bottles of this along with Maudite, Fin Du Monde, & Tres Pistoles. They were selling a 4, 12oz beer sampler for $8, which is a good price imo. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/694 ![]() Also tried the Craftsman Aurora Borelais Craftsman Aurora Borealis - Craftsman Brewing Co. - BeerAdvocate (draft only) Excellent ale, but a little difficult to find Pretty intense 11% beer, and killer buzz afterwards (wouldn't mind getting drunk off this on a regular basis, lol) Also bought a bottle of the Honey Moon white ale. Good price, but I'm intrigued to try it. |

yeah I get a lot of my stuff there from Trader Joe's.
my only qualm is that they cater so much towards wine. I enjoy wine as long as it's affordable (or someone else is paying), but I prefer beer. before long, you run out of stuff to try. Surprisingly Whole Foods is also decent w the larger branches. Pricing isn't unreasonable either. I'm going to check out a place called OC wine mart. their online catalogue looks promising & their pricing is reasonable. If I didn't live in LA I would be there already. http://www.yelp.com/biz/oc-wine-mart-irvine |
