I have a 1jz non vvti and I am purchasing a serpentine belt without ac and it asks me "hydro fan or clutch fan" and I was wondering what the deference is. Which one I should purchase?

Potentially Interested in a TOMEI Turbo Upgrade? Please let me know if you may be interested. Also I have a good used stock 1JZ VVTI Turbo also.

So after letting my s13 sit for a couple months, I put all new braided lines on the ps system and now have no leaks! Yay!
I also replaced the battery and decided to take it for a spin around the block - until I realized that it won't go into gear now for some reason?! It was shifting smooth before I parked it, so wtf? I took a couple quick vids of the clutch slave motion: So what gives? It will go into every gear when the car is off, but when the motor is running, it won't go into any gear! The clutch master is full of fluid... And I've never had a problem with the clutch or shifting, etc...

Same exact thing happened to my friend once. His Exedy clutch disc had fused to the flywheel from a hard day at the track on a clutch that he never broke in properly. Im not sure what you were doing to the car before you parked it, but it's just a suggestion.

I fixed it, using the method in this thread:
Car won't go into gear after burn out Basically I put it in gear with engine off and then pressed in clutch while turning the key to start it. It took a few tries, but then made a clanging noise and broke free! Thanks SF!

So I've been strongly considering chucking this junk ar in favor of a 2j. I have a line on vvti 2j's for a good price. One guy I talked to whos opinion I respect told me to save myself some future money and trouble and just find a regular gte. Has anyone here spent time to weigh the pros and cons of each motor? I know aem haltech and a few others are making ecus with vvti support now, and I fully intend to chuck the fly by wire whenever I move to a standalone. but is it significantly cheaper to extract power from the older motors? I've been searching the web but haven't found toooo much info on it. Thanks

I researched it a bit in the past. Read below from this same thread.
http://zilvia.net/f/engine-tech/3841...ml#post5438817 I'm in process of swapping the 2jz gte VVTi version right now and I'll let you guys know some wiring details. I don't think it'll be harder than non vvti wiring honestly. It's just that there isn't much info specifically on the wiring, but using the non VVTi wiring info out there will help some along with the aristo pinouts. |

Thanks for the input. I'm a little worried about the lack of an aftermarket at the moment, but its going to be a stock swap for a while. Aftermarket for the vvti 1j has grown quite a bit as it gains popularity, so I'm betting the same will happen with the 2j. At least hoping it does by the time I'm ready for a single and an ecu haha.

Non-VVTI's are getting harder and more expensive to find, at least in good shape, but if you can find one for a good price, i think its a much better option then going with the VVT-I, alot more straight forward, and tons of aftermarket for it.
VVT-I's on the other hand are generally a little cheaper, because there is less of a demand and more of them, and alot of people have used them with great success. |

Having less aftermarket is only a problem if you really need something that isn't available. Standalone engine management, and aftermarket cams are available that work for the VVTi version. What part do you know of that is great that isn't available on VVTi version?

Its more like a lack of options for the budget baller. I've got a couple other vehicles to maintain and a mortgage to pay. From what I've seen and understand ecus with fbw and vvti control are a bit pricier, and I can imagine your cam options are limited and pricey. These aren't crippling factors for the motors overall viability though. And like I said, I'm sure those issues will be addressed as they have been for the 1j. As long as there aren't any horrible, glaring issues with the vvti, I will likely go that route. Unless my importer can cut me a hella deal on a non vvti.

Arthur, read up on that link I posted earlier. There is a ton of information regarding vvti wiring.

Ivan, what are your goals and intended usage?
If you merely want 500whp, and a broader flatter Tq curve, then a vvti gte sounds like the hot ticket - newer motor and better down low oomph + better top end right?

My main concern with the vvti is cost of aftermarket. I want to be competetive and make events, but I also have a mortgage to pay. Last edited by ivantheterribl3; 10-26-2013 at 10:09 AM.. Reason: added stuff |
