Okay so I got fed up with my s14 C-H gauge and bought a real water temp gauge.

Quick question: how many degrees is "overheating" or too hot?

It varies from setup to setup.

Whatever temp the coolant starts to boil is the point of overheat. According to Wikianswers.com (LOL): "50/50 mix with 15 P.S.I. rad cap ( 265 degrees Fahrenheit / 129 degrees celsius )"

well i can tell you, according to my yashio factory gauge, my normal operating temp was 78 c (172f) and then went up to 81-82c (177-179) when i swapped the stock rad for a koyo

i'd be uncomfortable with anything over 220*F, anything past 240*F and i'm pulling over

Actually it's 194°F or 90°C normal operating temp
At 78°C or 172°F your ecu looks for a working 02 sensor
At 80°C or 176°F starts using the o2 sensor to trim the fuel

At 220°F or 104°c. you are considered hot. You would overheat quickly from here, if you allowed the engine to continue it's operation without any action!

what is the document/publication that you are using as a reference?

those were the temps my 240 ran year round, same as my z32.

im looking at the fsm, it looks like 194 is when the stock temp gauge starts to indicate 'hot' but ill have to look at it again later.

I'll state that for a KA's aluminum head and iron block, avoiding high temps and rapid cooling should be avoided. Shit I made another statement that should be challenged!
