re-ring vs rebuild

My rings are shot in my bottom end. Haven't torn it all the way down to see how bad but compression on first two cylinders is dead.

I was checking into both options. This is my DD while I build an engine for motorsports.
I was trying to keep it cheap. Now my friend argues that a full rebuild is the way to go, but price is about $1300. That's a lot to spend on an engine that has to "just has to get me through" for a month or so.

A re-ring would just be a fraction of that. but he says it wouldnt be piece of mind for the long run.

What do you guys think?

Sucks that it's your daily driver. But I'd say spend the $ to do it right the first time & not have to worry about tearing it apart again for another 10 years or whatever.

Pull a junk yard motor for $150.

If you lost your rings then your bearings are likely toast.

Do it the right way and refresh the entire motor. New bearings, rings, seals etc. Don't think you mentioned what motor but it's easier to sell and recoup the money on a fully rebuilt motor.

@Mikester: can't buy a car for a while. I have 4 that are in project mode.
@Corbic: am looking at that option problem is most of them are same or worse condition as mine.
@Gnnr: I have been but it sucks trying to get up n down these colorado hills lol.

piece of mind for what long run?

Re-ring is cheap, fast, there is no machine work required, no possibilities of anyone leaving behind metal shavings and things of that nature; follow the FSM procedure for torquing down your bolts and slap it together one more time.

I say just re-ring it and get new bearings. My SR started knocking, and instead of rebuilding the whole bottom end, I just got another crank that was in good condition, installed correct grade Nissan bearings, and while I was at it, I also re-ringed the pistons, and honed the cylinders.
You'll be fine if the liners are still in good condition.

@Aki180sx: 1990 300zx picked up for $1500, 1983 280zx turbo that came with two spare turbo motors $400, 1993 ford Festiva one owner car $400. All of them being fully restored and built. I have a one car garage and limited funds is what sucks. But owning something you love and having fun with it is far from a poor life decision.

@johannes: how is it doing these days any reoccurrences?

You don't have to buy every bargain project car you come across. If you can't afford to finish them all, what's the point? With that almost $2000, you could have fixed your engine correctly and then resumed focus on your track car. Instead of have 4 non-running pieces of shit bringing down the property value of your whole neighborhood.

Hahahaha damn.

Yeah take it slow man, humph I've been working on my s14 since last december exactly because of the same reason as you, passing oil and looking like a tool in the freeway and didn't pass emissions by any frigging chance.

Just ladt month I made a temporary and faster fix. Got another working engine that will last enough until I get the SR I've been looking for.

Lol at one project at a time. Agree.
But I bought them all at various increments. I've been working on the z32 for a few years. It.runs and drives but someone stole the full exhaust. Its muscle car loud without it. It has straight pipes. The city of Denver does not appreciate this as it has stated with various tickets.

The s130 i picked up in january. It was rust free with two original turbo motors. If you know your z's you know how nice of a STEAL that was.

The festiva is my DD and the car of this subject. It runs and drives but i gotta find a woodruff key to complete putting it back on the road. The engine I'm having built is for the Festiva. It will put me in 9 sec range NA. Then I will be going turbo. The purpose of this car is to compete with the boxters,coopers, and 911's on the track and out here in the hills.

Still trying to get ideas. Been asking a lot of ppl. Some people say even a re-ring is spending money foolishly. Others say just drop in a junk engine and be done with it.

Man up and make a decision, if you cant do that, you will never get anywhere in life. You are not asking for advice, you are asking us to make a decision for you. And i would throw a junk yard motor in it if you only need a dd for a month. No point in building something if you only need it for a month.
