DBW wise, the full drive by wire throttle bodies are labeled "ETCS-i". The other "ETCS" labeled throttle body on 1st gen VVTI's is still a semi-DBW setup, but can be bypassed into a normal throttle body setup much easier once you swap out ECU for an aftermarket setup. The OEM ECU monitors the throttle body and uses it for Traction Control, along with other small adjustments for fuel effeciency. From what I've read, sometimes wide open throttle can be slightly delayed on either TB because of this.

One other note with the ETCS-i throttle body is that the throttle body is essentially the idle control, so if you swap it out, you will need to also swap out the intake manifold for older models with their own IACV. This is interchangeable with either first gen 1jz VVTI (ETCS TB models) or very 1st gen 1JZ (TT setup) intake manifold.

If you intend to keep your OEM ECU and have a ETCS-i throttle body, this is one semi-pricey option:

Hi , i did 1jz trottle body (TRC) and plenum swap to my 2jzgte vvti . Did that cause engine goes to limp mode ? Can i keep oem ECU and not going for aftermarket ? My mechanic told me it is ok but limp mode issue is because of Auto transmission and not throttle body and i have to get manual transmission to solve this issue .

as for the head...

it has had a good clean up, all valves recut, new stem oil seals and 0.7 thou skimmed off the face

however I'm swapping this for another stock head that needs work to get some money back as I've found a guy who can port the head to apparently flow more than a 2jz....? so I hear anyway.

so the plan now is, send away the new untouched head to the machine shop who actually specialise in cylinder head tuning and they will do as much performance increase work as they can

also got some 264 bc cams to go in

I have the exact same setup! cept it's going into a sc400

I'm at the very beginning stages of my build so I haven't gotten to the wiring harness or intercooler yet. I'm about to purchase the VVTI 2JZ end of next month.

I've heard good things about Wiring Specialties so I might go with their harness.

Also you should look into the ECU Masters piggy back. Looks really nice for around $500

What are you even asking?

If you replace the DBW TB with a DBC will the motor be in limp mode? Yes

Can you run an aftermarket plenum with a DBW TB? Yes... Will you need an aftermarket ECU to do this? Yes

The mechanic swapped all the first gen 1jz throttle body , manifold and plenum to my car and he believes that they are interchangeable with no limp mode issue as he did it on many cars before .unfortunately i can't convince him and he want me to buy manual transmission .I wonder why i can not keep stock 2jz throttle body and auto tranny in my car and don't have these issues .

I tried this and they do not fit. I decided on cheap altima twin puller fans. They blow very hard. You have to trim the shroud some and you have to notch the radiator top support some, as has been discussed in this thread.

You can keep stock 2j throttle body and auto tranny with no limp mode issues...

If your mechanic says otherwise, time to find a new mechanic lol

1JZ swap

Hey I'm doing a 1J to S14 kouki swap this thread is incredible!
the biggest question I have is;
I'm using a T56 6 speed and I'm getting a clutch/flywheel/bellhousing adapter package from a local JZ tuner, but with this combo and normal mounts will the shifter come up too far forward like normal T56 swaps? and does anyone know an off the shelf shifter that will work?

Sikky has an adapter that should work. Of course you'll have to measure just to be sure. Post back in here with your findings

Whats up guys. I just started pulling apart my aristo 2jzgte vvti apart that I got from an importer for maintenance before putting it in the car. Is it common to have the spark plug valley filled with oil? I'm guessing the valve cover gasket leaks into the spark plug valley over time? Freaked me out for a second because the rest of the motor is pretty clean.

Also in the rear most sparkplug hole it was filled with a aqua blue watery liquid. Anybody have a clue what that could be? Coolant that came out of the water pump was red so it's not coolant.

Thanks

Does anyone know what size/ thread pitch the S14 clutch master cylinder is ? I never had a stock master and I need to get an adapter for the wilwood I bought.

The clutch line I purchased a few months ago is from R154 slave to stock S14 CMC

I'm aiming for 550whp from my 1JZ on E85, it's only done about 80,000 kms (50,000miles) should I be going with a new head gasket? thought I could save some money and stay with the OEM one

If your stock head gasket isn't blown you will be fine using it. Now if you take the head off the car for any reason I'd get a new OEM head gasket.

That's how my 1J came from the importer when it came from the importer too and I was also freaked out. I'm guessing it's just from shipping or something. Maybe it tipped over? Mine has 0 issues now that the car is running

Just a quick question for opinions sake, how many of you guys run R154 transmissions with your swaps? I'm taking my time just buying parts and stacking them. I already have the R154 with the proper bellhousing and all. Like I said just for opinions sake how do you guys feel about these trannys before I go any farther forward. Thanks a bunch

You'll be fine with stock ecu/fuel injectors. If you're on the jdm 2j then you'll be looking at 380hp-400hp max with high injector duty cycle. If you're on the US motor set, then you can get about 500....of course you will need a pump.

Best bet is you will have to contact Collins Adapters or buyer to find out.

You can buy either, but it's best to go with the external slave cylinder trans because if you go with the internal slave cylinder trans, you will have to buy an upgraded slave cylinder from z speed at the tune of $325+ because the oem slave doesnt last, especially when you start using higher clamping force pressure plates
