I understand they are more durable than VLSD, but how durable are they? Has anyone broken one?

They can handle the S15 Spec R's 250lbs/ft of torque (stock level) and more.

Helical gears last quite long, and require far less maintenance than a clutch type.

VLSD = nice for street driving
HLSD = drop it in, never worry about it, great for road racing and autoX
Clutch type = handles more power, but needs more upkeep. Possibly more expensive depending on brand/shop

Unless you are running major boost or plan to swap in a VK45DE, i wouldn't worry about breaking it

I have heard they are durable, but just need to know how durable. Quaife has a lifetime warranty on there unit. I'm wondering if the same material is used for the S15 as the quaife.
I know the s15 and quaife unit are helical, but the torque biasing is different.

look, if ou're worried about warranties, you probably shouldn't be driving a used car or modifying it.

The HLSD will last unless you do something stupid or crazy to it.

I would bet they're good for 500hp+ depending on how you drive, and what kind of tires you run. You would likely break teeth off the pinion or ring gears or in the transmission itself before actully breaking gears in the diff.

I got something to add here. I started off with an open diff, then got a 2-way, then bought another car equipped with vlsd, got my extra open diff welded 2 days ago and replaced the vlsd, then i drove my friend's car on the track with an hlsd yesterday.

Starting from the top
open diff is for daily driving for a non-enthusiast or a show car. And that's it.
2-way is damn overrated. Clunks a lot and sucks for daily driving. Very shitty. Grips hard when it needs to but unnecessary
Vlsd is ok for daily driving/some clutch kick drift action with shitty tires. Otherwise unresposive and shitty. Again good for show cars.
Welded diff.Awesome for daily driving and drifting. A LOT LESS NOISY than a 2-way because there is no slippage. It's just like a 2-way minus the clunking. Only the tires chirp around tight corners and very slightly. The operation of a welded diff > 2way . A LOT BETTER.
HLSD...umm. Not terrible by other reviews, but i drove this car right after i drove my car with the weld loc diff, and there is no comparison. It felt like a vlsd compared to welded. I suppose it would be very forgiving during grip sessions.

open diff= sucks. Period. It's free, though.

VLSD= cheap, sporadically effective, risky to buy because you don't know if its worn out, and even if it hasn't worn out, it will wear out sooner rather than later, and then you've got an open diff again

Clutch 2-way = like others said, not practical for daily driver, require maintenance, not cheap. Effective for drifter, less than optimal for grip. If you're a drifter and u don't care about noise, you buy a 2-way. Understeer on corner entry

Clutch 1.5-way = same noise, price, and maintenance issues, also not cheap, but great for grip, less than optimal for drift

HLSD= if u find the correct hardware and get it for under $700, best you can get for grip driving. No maintenance issues, no noise. Step on gas and you rotate (presuming you have decent tires). Crap for drift, as others have said

Welded diff= great for drift, cheap, lasts forever. Chirp tires in daily driving, but at least it doesn't clunk. Not sure of its effect for grip, but probably similar to a 2way with 100% locking (understeer on entry?)

This is just from what I read. I own an HLSD, had open diff for 2 years. HLSD gets bad rap because the fast majority of people here drift rather than grip, and therefore have no need for the advantage an HLSD provides (and it does help).

So if you are going to road course or auto X: buy an HLSD or Quaife (pricier HLSD)
If you are going to drift: buy a welded diff or 2-way
If if a diff is lower on your to-do list than 19's and a body kit: get a VLSD or leave it open
