I'm thinking of buying an early 90's 240sx and eventually droping an MTX sr20det in there. I've read a lot of posts about all this stuff, and i have decided to go with an sr. My question is if i buy an ATX 240, will it be a much more pita to install a MTX, or should i get a MTX right away and save any possible headaches involved in the swap?

One more thing, what's the difference between the S13, S14, and the S15? I couldn't figure it out, thanks.

p.s. i'm sorry if this has been discussed before.

s13, s14,s15 fallow the year/model changes in the 240 line.
I have been reading up on engine swapping on a early s13 and havnt seen any specific with issues on it. I could possibly see ecu issues but not sure.... also your going to have to swap your center piece.. or if me since im not out for looks I would just cut it

what about the space for the clutch, will that have to be rigged up somehow, or is that not a problem because the 240 offers both trannys for the same body?

You will need some parts, all available from a junked manual 240sx.

You will need to hang the clutch, and install a master cyl. From what I've heard, that's not incredibly hard. Also the break petal on autos is too big(wide), but you can swap it or just cut it down.

You will need a shifter, linkage and the center console piece. Should be easy.

I believe the drive shafts are different lengths with auto and manual. This part might be a little more difficult.

Overall, it's easiest if you have a junked manual 240sx as a parts car.

Is there a lot of 240's at junk yards? I used to have a '93 Probe and those were really hard to find junked, until i contributed mine due to an accident. So do you think it will be easier to just buy a manual? Is there any benefits of buying an automatic? I don't think there would be, besides the fact that they're easier to find.

ok guys enough of this ,
straight dope time
Yes there are several people all over socal who have switched a Auto tranny car to a manual SR20det setup.
If you are going that way you are going to put in the SR20 ECU anyways.
Switching from a auto to manual consists of these parts
manual driveshaft
manual shift boot, center console does not need to be changed on S13's there is a plastic install plate that goes around the auto shifter you pop that out and put in the manual boot.
clutch pedal
clutch master and lines
manual trans engine backing plate but if you drop in a full SR swap you won't need to worry about that, same goes for flywheel , flywheel bolts and trans to engine mounting bolts
you will need a manual trans crossmember.
shifter is on the tranny
as far as putting the pedals in goes on both the S13 and S14 firewalls the outlines for the clutch master hole and bolt holes drill them out and hang the clutch pedal and mount the master cylinder.
As far as brake pedal goes cut it down its much easier than dropping your steering column to put in the manual brake pedal.
Ok thats it in a nutshell.
If you are having a hard time finding a deal on a manul car than the auto may be the way to go .
I wound up doing it because I found a extremely low mileage 91 auto. I now own probably the lowest mileage S13 in all of socal

Thanks for all the input, but I found a good deal on a MTX! I'm very happy, but it's good to know what is exactly needed for that kind of work, thanks a gain guys.

Just bought a '90 240sx se with 102K miles on it, it's in good shape and a very reasonable price.

Oh yeah, and no need for a DET right now. Changing cars from a '94 V6 Cougar to a '90 240SX is enough to get adjusted to... for now.
