I have a xcessive skid plate on my car because it still has stock engine mounts and downpipe on it. It sits a little low but it is thick as a tank so it really doesn't matter.

What about a street sign? Anyone have a write up on how to make one? Figured a sign would be much cheaper.

yeah it's pretty torn up. I left it on just to protect debris from hitting everything.. it's done the job up until now but it looks like it's in it's last few hours of life haha

I actually like how it mounts, but like I said it sits kinda low. But my car's kinda low so such is life.

I did this long time ago on my old car, worked great until the hardware holding it up got ground down, then it was a pain in the ass to get off.

edit: haha found pictures: jesus this was dumb..

lI found this statement funny. lol

Ive said it before and ill say it again, theres no point in a skid plate in my opinion.
Unless you use it as a shield to road debris.

Its just something to hang lower than what its 'protecting'. If youre hitting your pan, youre going to just go right thru the skid plate or its going to dent the plate, and probably crack the pan anyways.

Then there is the thickness argument.
You hit a bump in the road. What do you thinks gonna give first? your metal sheet? or the earth?

I agree completely, but as the pan sits it would have been hit more than once since I have been driving the car. I could literally jack up the car by this skid plate. The mounting points and shape keep it from bowing up and hitting the pan, so nothing ever really comes in contact.

But once I put on the new engine mounts and downpipe it will most likely come off.

True that. I'm not against them. I'm just not a believer in them lol.
My friends e30 has one but all those BMW motors are so tall their pans and like the lowest part of the car by an inch. His bolts onto the frame of his car. I always wonder if he hits something hard enough if it'll tweak anything.

His is literally like a half inch thick.

i agree with you. all the sheetmetal skid pans do nothing but keep road debris out of the engine bay. i have one on both of my cars and thats the only reason why i have them, to keep that bay shiny.
