Okay guys and girls on the board. Here is the situation. I am the owner of an '89 240sx fastback. This particular model as you know came with the KA24E now my question is related to turboing the block. in terms of what the cost will be and what would be the best set up of turbo charger/intercooler ect... along with what is the safe boost level before having to totally rebuild the whole engine. Would like to be able to have some notes on the subject before looking to the speedshop I want to have do the work.

http://hmpmotorsports.hypermart.net/ supposedly sells kits for SOHC. he quoted me $3700 for a nice setup. $2700 without intercooler and some kind of fuel computer. safe boost levels, dunno. i think up to 10 psi with intercooler without a rebuild is ok but i'm not exactly sure.

check out 240sx.org.  In their installs section they have a few guys who have installed turbo's into their sohc's.

Why waste time with the SOHC motor when you can pick up a DOHC KA motor for cheap just about anywhere?  If your going to turbo a KA, might as well get the better of the KA motors.  Just IMO.

the mods to a stock engine sometimes is cool because of the factor not everyone has a 12V turbo

I would like to know the answer to that as well. I have been wanting one of those for a while. But just wondering, how much does it cost to rebuild an engine?

A KA24DE would be cool to but wouldn't that add another few thousand to the total cost of what I would spend in the build up. I am looking for a good HP range between 300-400 rwhp and to stay balanced on that side of my propsed spending. reason being I have a slew of other mods I want to do to.

trust me, you are going to spend a fortune rebuilding a ka24e to get 3-400 rwhp. You are going to have to have everything custom in ka24e, just spend the extra money for an sr or a ka24de. it might end up saving you some money in the long run.

Thats true. An SR swap would be about 5,000 totally including parts and instalation. That I know would be good for about 250 hp right off the bat. Then with some light tuning push 300 at the flywheel. The KA24DE has some nice kits and I know I could then do some serious work with the 2.4 liter engine. New slugs, new cams, ect....

am I wrong in assuming that an sr20 has the same hp output as the ka24 before the stock turbo?  if turbo increases output 20-50 % I figure it at least started at 155hp

Our US SR20de's had about 155 hp. The SR20DET's push anywhere between 200-250 hp. this based on generation s13-s15. plus we only had sr powered cars here that were front drive.
