Trunk problem

Hey guys, I been having this problem with my trunk. The Dang thing will not close right! I tried adjusting the hinges but does not work. The trunk just stays loose and when I drive the thing rattles like crazy! Most likely it was caused from the previous guy who put the manual tranny in the trunk and forced it closed. Will a new trunk fix it?

You dont adjust the hinges, you adjust the catcher to make sure the trunk is snug.

mine was the exact same way i lowered the catcher all the way and it was still not sitting flush and still gaped. i went to pull apart grabbed a better catcher and drilled a lower hole for the catcher and now it sits perfectly, no water leaks or f***ing ugly alignment. i still don't know y it was doing that maybe a bad trunk....good luck

P.S. on your lever problem there is a metal line that connects to the catcher make sure its in there right i don't use mine i just use my key. i have 2 keys only one opens the trunk and the other starts the car and neither open the door lol.

I know on the S13 trunk lock there is a little lever you move it down and it locks the trunk So if someone breaks In your car they can't use the handle to open the trunk, do the S14's have this lever? That could be why it won't open from the handle inside the car

Not to thread jack, but I also have trunk problem. I have a 90 fastback and whenever I drive on the freeway going like 65-75mph, it gets really loud in the back. Any idea what it can be? Thanks

NO. That is just the weather stripping to keep the water out when it rains. There SHOULD BE (but from the sound of it proabbly aren't) black rubber stoppers that are under the trunk lid that keep the trunk from moving up and down. They are probably just empty holes now if you're having this problem.

I'm dealing with the same EXACT issue with my kouki. Been rocking it for almost 2 years and done everything short of remove the trunk. I have plenty of s14 friends and I don't know why I haven't thought of swapping with one of them but now I will. Let you know what happens.

Here's a pic for those of you that don't know what we're talking about:

just looks like the catch is way too high... the lift bars being bent wouldn't cause this IMO because the gap at the bottom of the trunk is pretty even.

Check the bottom part of the latch / catch bar mechanism. it has slotted mounting holes so that you can move it up and down, try moving it all the way down, and make sure there are no spacers making the catch bar lower than it should be.

I had a very similar problem on my s13's hatch when i first got the car, some previous owner had put washers under the catch bar to space it down to "fix" the rattling hatch. all i did is return everything to normal and set the latch down more and now it's perfect.

Good luck

The cross bar that the bottom catch is attached to may be shifted. My Silvia in Japan had this issue, I had to bang it out a bit to actually line up with the latch in the trunk hatch.

Mine are lined up already. Don't look bad either.

Just because its straight on doesnt mean its lined up properly. Im telling you, the latch is more than likely shifted. When you adjust the catch, it only moves up/down and a lil bit side to side. The issue you have is the whole thing its bolted to. Like you said, the previous owner had some heavy shit in there that could have rolled and pushed the whole trunk back so the catch is out of alignment physically.

the angle of the bottom latch plays a SIGNIFICANT role in the gap, and how tight the trunk closes. I fixed this issue on my s14 but only using the top bolt on the lower striker, and twisting the bottom of it to the driver's side.

Try playin with the angle of the striker more, remove the bottom screw and angle it some ,but u will only have to use one screw since the bottom holes will be off centered, but ur trunk will be straight.
