Ok lame question for you guys, If I went to unStable-Hybrids and got a RB25DET or even RB26DETT swap.... Am I stupid to think that this might be leagal? How hard would it be to pass these off in Emmisions? Or should I just forget about street driving a car with a different powerplant, Anyways I think it would be fun to pump up the power and see if I can push 600hp in a 240 like the skyline's
I would think these would be just as leagal as a SR20DET install that everyone seems to be doing.

all of the aforementioned swaps are technically completely illegal, as none of the engines were/are EPA certified. All, with little or no extra work will meet emissions tests as those in japan are very strict.
this is not to say that noone has performed these swaps on a daily driver. inspections tend to get expensive, but how many people do you really know who run an inspection station, and can tell the difference between a KA and an SR, or RB? for that matter how many think that your "little Nissan" could be RWD?

Well, I should warn you. I've been told that the RB engines can be very hard to get parts for. The SR parts are numerous as it's a more popular swap.
Of course, take into account that I haven't had either engine personally, though I think it's pretty obvious given the number of nissan performance part online shops I've seen that carry stuff for the SR and no mention of the RB. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. |

It is possible to make the RB or SR engine legal in your 240 but It would take over $20,000 to do it...if your still interested, e-mail me and I'll get you some ppl to talk to.
It does say right on unstable-hybrids website that these engines aren't legal and are for offroad use only. Your only real option is to just pay someone under the table to give you a "pass" on the inspection. Really the ka+t isn't legal either...but most stuff people do to make their car faster isn't.

Well, in Texas, supposedly any engine swap is legal. I've been told as long as it passes emissions, you are good to go. Also, if it doesn't pass emissions, we can regist. our cars in a county that has no emission standards. A police officer told me all this...he could be wrong, but I'm willing to take his word for it.

All depends on where you live. Here in Ohio emissions testerrs do not do a visual. (Except to see if there is a cat installed.) Then the car only has to pass a sniffer. I haven't pu an SR on the sniffer (yet) but it should pass w/ a good cat. In stock form atleast.

Well, he asked if it was legal, not what he could get away with. No, w/out serious cash to do testing and get it EPA certified it will never be legal.
If you are in an area with no visual inspection, you can make an SR or RB pass the sniffer and you will get a "pass" and sent on your way...however your car will still not be completely legal. You cannot put a engine in a north american car that didn't come on a north american car...no way around it even if it puts cologne out the tailpipe. You also cannot put an older engine into a newer car, regardless of what country it came from. IE: s13 SR into s14 240sx...or vg30et into s14 240sx. The easiest way to use one of these engines is to just pay someone under the table to pass you and live with the fact that you have an illegal car...*shrugs* big deal Its not like the reasons you want one of these engines is for legal use anyway right? If you decide to make your engine pass emissions so its semi-legal (if there is such a thing) you can retard your timing turn down the boost and modify your exhaust, moving your cat closer to the engine. I think the SR is pretty close to passing in stock form anyway so you should pass with flying colors if you do that.

Where at in Ohio? I have my car registered in Ohio for the sheer fact that they don't do emissions on cars except commercial vehicles. (and that is only in certain counties) I have a SR happilly registered and certified in OH. Just go to Franklin Co. to have it registered if it is a prob in your area

It's only illegal if you get caught.. LOL
nrcooled - I'm in Montgomery county (dayton Area). Testing has been going on here for about 10 years. I lived in Lucas county (Toledo) for a couple years, they still don't test up there. Can I register my car in a different county from where I live? |
