The issue is that there is enormous income inequality in this country. I'm all for working hard and making your way to the top but the issue is how many people's backs you've stepped on to get there. Why should you be able to support a family on minimum wage? The last time I worked a job that paid minimum wage I was 17. In between semesters in college I worked at a tire store in Texas where I started at 10/hr and was making 12.50/hr two months later. I made enough money to pay rent, eat and go drifting if I wanted to.

By the time you're in your 20s there's no excuse for you to either be a) not in school or b) working a minimum wage job. I have a friend who started popping rivets at the local airport when we graduated high school and now he makes 19/hr full time. He can pay rent and support his wife...

I'm 23 and I own a house and three cars. Sure I'm an idiot and I couldn't support anyone besides myself right now but if I wanted to settle down and support a family I could sell both my 240s and stop wasting money in that area of my life.

Doubling the minimum wage:

American companies need to take cuts to pay all their people more. Hurting growth. Pressuring businesses to go overseas.

The government will be able to tax the people more. Hurting your shiny new wage.

Everything you buy is made in Japan, China, or Mexico. No shit America is beyond broke.

Minimum wage jobs are for first time workers or second jobs, not careers. This shit is survival of the fittest. You're owed nothing. And the fact is, the more people want for a minimum wage, the more of a cost justification companies have to spend the money automating everything. Fucking people out of jobs.

Yeah I mean businesses pay for workers comp. It's also wise to have insurance. I'm a freelance photographer and I have a insurance policy that covers my income if I'm injured so my family isn't put in a tough place financially.

Yeah, it's typically a good idea to supplement what work offers, and it is not cost prohibitive. I spend about $40 a month on a plan that provides sufficient coverage for our family budget. I have very little coverage on my wife, because I am the sole provider.
