How about having a recent posts box on the main page... I really like that cause it shows you if someones replied to your posts and lets u know what forums are most active and shows you the new ones... On the main forums page, there is a box at the right on the forum name.  It says the last post replied to, and who replied.  Also, in the profile section, you can have replies to your posts emailed to you.

I've seen a forum where they show the amount of replies that have been entered from the last time you saw a certain thread. It shows it next to the total amount of replies in the thread with a little '(#)' I think thats pretty cool.
