How much clearance should there be between tires/wheels and suspension components?

I recently got a pair of 18x8.5 +35 Konig Ampliform rims for the front of my S13 and fitted them with 235/40/18 tires. They fit, but they are VERY close to the suspension components - just millimeters away, in fact. Is there such a thing as TOO close, even if there is no actual contact (due to perhaps deflection of the strut during hard cornering or tire diameter growth at speed)? Would it not be a bad idea to get a spacer (maybe 5mm or so) for my front wheels just to give a little more wiggle room? Or are things generally OKAY as long as the wheel turns?

As long as nothing touches, you're fine.

Most manufactures recommend a minimum of 5mm clearance for compliance in suspension components.

Is it the tire or wheel that's close?

Both are close. But it looks a whole lot better with a 5mm spacer.
