I was ask by the guys that are about to come over and work on my car.  I hope these guys can fix that crap because the sound got worse today and my baby is not moving til she's fixed.

If the old one looks bad, replace it.  ####, replace it anyway.  Valve cover gaskets are cheap.  And no, I've never heard of a resealable vcg.  I don't think I'd ever want to use one though.  Wouldn't trust that idea.  Hard parts are different, but gaskets are rubber/cork/whatever.  Have to replace or leave in if good.

no you'll need a new one.  i was gonna powdercoat my valve cover, but after adding up the cost of a new gasket, painting, plus my time, i didnt think it was worth it.  but if yours needs replacement, then yes, you need a new gasket

Are you asking if you need to replace your valvecover gasket after taking it off? Unless it looks bad or is leaking it is fine. I have had the valve cover off of my engine probably 10 times and I am still using the original gasket with no problems at all. If it looks dry and has cracks or is leaking go ahead and get a new one.

Is that what's making your car sound like a diesel? What year is it?

I was asking the sort of question oberkill was describing but it didn't matter because the guys knew and went ahead and tore into the engine. By the way, the sound was due to the little piece of middle that bolts down behind the timing chain and then comes up and over it. Im not sure if you guys know exactly what Im talking about but anyhow this piece had broken off and was laying on the timing chain, bouncing up and down in between the chain and the valve cover, making that clanking sound. Its a good thing the area in bteween the chain and valve cover was a snug fit or that little piece would have been dancing around the cams and all kinds of good stuff. So we took that little piece out and now she sounds all smooth again.

By the way S13Grl....its a 96 SE but before m/c

Yes that chain shield is a known issue with both the KA and the SR. It isnt needed and there is actually a letter out to the Nissan techs to remove when changing the timing chain. But just to reiterate on the topic you CAN reuse the valve cover gasket!!!!

30 bucks for a valve gasket? Try like a couple bucks, there ussually dirt cheap. The valve cover gasket isn't the most stressed gasket in the engine, not exactly under that much pressure. If your that worried. maybe buy a new one and if you open it again then reuse it if your that worried.

They ARE resealable..
Unless it's been on there so long and in such bad shape, that it tears or sticks... then yeah.. get rid of it. .
But it is okay to reuse it.

If you took your car to Nissan they would not replace the valve cover gasket if they took the valve cover off unless it was bad or if they were shady. It is MADE to be resealable and they are ~ $30 from Nissan not sure if they can be gotten elsewhere. I am not speaking from theory I am speaking from experiance, I have had the valve cover off of dozens of KA's, SR's, and RB's (all together not each LOL) and have only rarely had to replace one.
