Post Florida man cancels Nissan GT-R order due to 'black box'

09-24-2008 02:58 PM

Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Nissan GT-R

A Florida man named Scott Weires has canceled the order for his long-awaited Nissan GT-R. Why? It's not that he was disappointed in the car's performance credentials, far from it. The problem is that the GT-R is equipped with a 'black box', similar in theory to the kind found on airplanes to help determine what went wrong in case of an accident or breakdown. By the end of 2012, car buyers won't have a choice as to whether their new car is equipped with a 'black box,' or Electronic Data Recorder -- they will be federally mandated to carry one. These devices track information that could be useful to the manufacturer in determining exactly what is, or has been, going on with a car. There are a few worries, though, that warranty claims could be denied if the automaker, Nissan in this case, deems that the car was being raced or abused in some way or by police or lawyers to determine culpability. Nissan's GT-R carries an on-board recorder that keeps track of the past few day's worth of driving and cannot be disabled. In the case of Scott Weires, an attorney no less, that was enough to look elsewhere. Would it be for you?

This should be interesting. Although I don't think it'd matter if they'll come mandatory in 2012 vehicles since the world's coming to an end around that time.

Besides, it doesn't say anything about it being absolutely mandatory in the older cars- just cars coming off the lot.

From what I understand the "black boxes" the government is mandating only record information five seconds before an airbag deployment, and can be disconnected. They're already in a lot of new cars (all GM and Ford? All California cars? I couldnt find anything definitive.)

Who the hell buys a GTR and plans on not ripping it. The car is made to race and to go fast. Another BS thing about the GTR is that it is speed limited to like 115MPH or something until you get on racetrack. When you get to the track a satelite signal takes of the speed restrictor. Thats crap, who wants to spend 100,000 dollars on a car that acts like your mom. I honestly love the GTR but cmon Nissan what the hell are you guys thinking..

Only Japanese GT-Rs are like that...

As for what ryguy said about the black boxes, I really hope he's right because if it's monitoring your actions all the time, well I can't say I like that one bit.

Wow you fail at reading and really knowing about the GTR. The U.S. GTR's are not speed limited to 115mph thats the Japanese ones.
Plus I know people that have bought them and its not like you can't drive or go fast. That lawyer in Florida is a typical lying lawyer. So of course he is going to whine and complain. Get your facts about the car before posting.

This thread is so full of fail! In fact its a fail to start.

ummm... Punjabi is on the border of pakastan and india.... people from Punjabi are some times called Poonjabs. I know this because I thought it was a racial slur too, until Poonjab lock smith brothers came and fixed a locked car at my work, and I asked them about it.

to say its a racial slur is the same as me calling you an American, when you're really from some where else, but wait... everyone else in the world would be insulted if they were called American. I guess it really comes down to context.
