If I'm not mistaken, "dampener" is a noun. "Dampen" is the verb form.

Consider this though...

Something that is wet is damp.
Therefore, something that makes something else damp is a damper.
Something that is more wet than another thing is damper.

To dampen can mean to make something wet, but it also can mean "to dull or deaden."
If the verb dampen means "to dull or deaden," then something which acts the verb is a dampener.

i just did a quick google search, damper is the proper term when referring to suspension.

damper and dampen is reference to suspension and the proper terms. dampener and dampening is reference to making something wet.
