Air Flow Is Overrated

Okay enough is enough

Who can agree to this statement:

"Increasing airflow increases horsepower, so on a car, the best way to increase airflow for horsepower would be to remove the filter completely"

And yes I know you cannot drive like that so dont flame

But heres my problem. K&N says a 15% boost in horsepower

other companies say 5 to 10 horsepower gained by changing to a filter that looks like a cone or whatever

Does anyone agree with an increase of like, maybe 1 or 2 max HP? Cause i took my filter right out the other day and times the same run 5 times (fill throttle, second gear, 60 kms to 100 kms)

and it was the same each time as if I had the stock filter in!

So as I told K&N, Ill buy their filter when they stop saying it adds 15%, which on a 240SX is like...er... about 22 horses!!?? HAHAHAHA no.

PS I do like the sound they make though.

They say "up to 15%"

If you have a crappy, clogged stock filter, feeding a heavy modified engine... you just might.

It's just advertising.

Buy K&N because they filter well and they're reusable, not for any power increase.

IIRC isnt the stock intake pipe the biggest restricter in most cars? i remeber reading somewhere they tested a panel filter a cone filter and a full intake tube w/filter. there was no noticable difference between the upgrade panel filter and the cone but put the pipe on and it made a huge difference. anyway something to think about.

the cone filter and the velocity stack are supposed to straighten the airflow, making it less turbulent. Therefore increse horsepower. This is why you felt no diff. without the filter.

I heard that the a cone shaped filter gives best performance because it sucks air in from a 360 degree angle, as to having it naked will only induct air from one point.

and once the air is sucked in through the filter... where does it go, somewhere other than that "one point"?

I replaced stock airfiler to K&N about a year ago. I felt a little better response but that's it. Not much noticable hp gain but it'll last lifetime so that's good. Gain 15% is total BS in my opinion. I would say 1-5 hp gain is the truth.

note the key words in K&N's add... gains (now heres those keywords) UP TOO 15% . as I said its all in the application you could stretch a sock over your intake and see no difference if your piping is whats restricting your CFMs like it is on our cars

i think the sock would probably get sucked in tho... and probably would have to be replaced alot at least. but i've never tried it, so don't take my word for it.

Bah. Open turbo inlet. No filter. Just an intake horn. That's how it's supposed to be done.
