what are you talking about

Japanese mfgs were not trying to prove themselves in this market during the 90s. The only segment that was will new to them was the Luxury market, such as the LS and creating brands like Lexus/Infiniti... that was new, NOT the sport compact car market. Initial sales for these cars was very good, the reason they slowed down was because of ONE thing: VTEC. Honda really snatched that market up with their new technology.

The dollar/yen was only one part of the equation during the mid ninties. The new safety requirements imposed in what, 1996? that was the reason many manufacturers pulled their cars from the lineup. This is why we dont have the 97+ Z32 300ZX... and why cars like the Supra got pulled, it was just too expensive. FD RX7 also stopped in 96. The new requirements were going to be costly.
