WTF is in my SR20DET tranny...

Hello zilvia,

So I yanked my transmission out of my S13 last night and this is what I found chillin' in the output shaft... WTF is it? I'm thinking of just junking the tranny after I take the bell housing off, or can it be cleaned and saved?

i took out my driveshaft out to replace the seal and when i looked to see if there was a seal i saw the end of this piece in question. I spun the output shaft and it moved freely so i grabbed it with some needle nose pliers and pulled it out...

Is there anything wrong with the transmission beside having that metal rod in it?

When i drove it home it vibrated like crazy and made a humming noise, i thought it was the driveshaft, but i guess not. When i took out the VSS sensor a bunch of metal flakes came out, i plan on breaking open the case later today.

Are you saying you want us to believe, this came out of the transmission that also had a drive shaft installed?
That looks to be about 12in I could be wrong, but I call bullshit anyway. No signs of gear oil hmmmmmmmmmm.

check the shop manual. If that is actually supposed to be in there, something is seriously fugged up in your trans that you could get that piece out so easily.

Sounds like you need to start looking for another trans.

lol wow thats a first. It is part of the tranmission, its a guide. its connected to the shifter side bell housing so you can just get a KA BH section and swap it.

EDIT : that is if the gears arnt all fucked up

I've been searching the web for KA and SR tranny diagrams, breakdown illustrations and have found anything, just a general "take out trans, split case apart, pull gearbox out...ect"
I split it open yesterday and I didn't find anything wrong with it, gears, syncros,
Shift forks, all look fine....

Sileighty_85, thanks for the useful information!

I broke it down to bear bones and everything seemed fine, minus that guide. thought maybe i dont need it? wrong. I put everything back together and started shifting through the gears and i REALLY had to hunt for them, but they did go in, so i thought maybe ill throw it back in and ride her till she blows, not 2min after i thought about it the shifter got stuck in 3rd and locked up.. good thing i didnt put it in. i just searched for a new tranny on here and found a solid one in LA for $220. now just waiting on my new ACT clutch and im back on the track! Thanks Zilvia, mods can close the thread now.

Remember KA transmissions will work when you swap out the bellhousing, that will save you some cash if it ever goes out again. RB20 will work as well but for some reason people tend to associate those with performance transmissions.
