IMHO ported = ricer
getting the most hit out of your system, purely for the decibel value is total poser. 2 12"s will get you a TON of volume, ported is just overkill, don't you want a system that sounds nice at ANY volume AND is sonically accurate?

I'm sure I'll start some flame with that comment, bring it :P

I have a box that fits exactly what you want, except it isn't ported. Provides about 1.5 ft^3 for each sub. I was gonna run 2 Infinity perfect 12's with a 1200 watt JBL mono block amp. It's internally air tight, and braced.

Ported boxes sound like poo.

ported doesn't have worse sound quality than sealed. You guys.. don't know what you are talking about.

Anyway I could make you a fiberglass one for around 150-200 bucks and it would fit. I fit 4 15's in the hatch of an escort using fiberglass. There are pics on my site, click the german guy. You live in chesterfield va, I don't know where that is but I'm in WV and could prolly come to you.

SHIFT_PHHSSTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's all you need.....

However, subs are nice.... to a point. My friend Scott that works at a local audio shop in town, Has 12 12's in his Escort! Your ears start bleeding just from standing beside the car. Now he's doing 4 15's in the company Tahoe, but, here's the kicker, he will be putting 20,000 watts of amps in that thing.....

Thanks everybody for the responces. Sealed=sounds like shit. They are in a sealed box now,I have heard the same exact subs in a ported box, with less wattage and were actually louder/clearer than they are now. Call that poser if you want, but if you think I am a poser? I've got an automatic transmission too.....so you don't have to tell me what kinda ricer I am,I already know. I like subs, they don't really affect the way the car feels or gas mileage (when they are not up too loud ) .

Andrave-I might take you up on that, right now I'm still looking into my options/talking to some more people. I will PM you if so,that escort is badass ( I never though I'd say an escort is badass )

heres a pic of my setup (work in progress)

sealed is loud enough if the enclosure is built to spec.
you might squeeze more SPL out of a ported box,
but NO DOUBT that sealed enclosures hit harder.
trust me ive built a few of each.

Why do you need 2 - 12's I thought that whole ghetto fabulous bass shaking the license plate off your car went out of style ten years ago. Ohh and here's a tip from someone who used to live in a really shietty neighborhood, put some car audio stickers on your car and then tint your windows. The tint keeps the glass from making any noise when it is being shattered and is keeps the person who is stealing your stuff from getting blood on your interior. (flame over)

You know the funny thing is I've been looking for one - 10" name brand sub in a box and no one has them used. If anyone is selling one, let me know...

If i wanted to be "cool" why the fuck would a buy an econo sports car built in 1991 ?? For the money I paid for that car,I could have easily bought a ____ (cav, civic, whatever) and put some 17-18's on it and still have a little $$ left over.

I'll get back to the rest of y'all later I"m walking out the door right now (sorry)

lol.....get a Solo X!!!
1 sub will do the trick lol!!

ported boxes are the best 4 spl...u can skate by/trick people with 10 in a fat ported box and people will think its 2 12's....i know everyone else does...and only at 300watts. i hit 134.8 with one 10 at 300watts in a 2.27cf ported box...not too bad 4 1 ten. it hits low notes hard. it was hit those #s at 52Hz.

so in other words u could kill with one 12 or 15 ina fat ported box. i been in a truck with one DD 12 in a big ported box. i couldnt even get in the truck really...it was tickling my ears too much

before i had 2 alpine r's 10 inchers in a probox as well (great stuff but heavy) run by a mono crossfire amp.

you can tweak any system to sound nice and responsive. wanna test your stereo setup? play some Ron D core or some hard techno on full bass, see how your shit can keep up. theres a reson things cost more.

actually a properly designed ported box will always be around 3 db louder than a sealed box. I have several books on the topic on my shelf from way back.
The problem is that below the frequency that the ported box is tuned for, the low end extension simply drops like a rock. Below that point the woofers excursion will increase exponentially and output will decrease. Since output is so low, its easy to crank it and not realize the cone is moving so much, and you will damage your speakers.
Bandpass enclosures can actually increase output over 6 db over a simple sealed box, but the design filters out high and low frequencies above and below the tuning frequencies. They require a lot of math and perfect cuts, so they aren't for beginners, but when properly designed and constructed, they can offer very high output in their tuning range with relatively low power.

Anyway I have a panasonic 10" sub that is pretty good that i will sell rednerd. its got a rubber surround, silver poly cone, cast frame, bumped backplate. I was used gently and is a very very good sub. I also could finish the fiberglass box that i started for it for my s13 hatch back. It nestles in behind the driver's side fender well and doesn't need too much work to finish. If you are interested just contact me. I could also make a box to fit a coupe, since I have one that I could use for the molding.

I used to compete in IASCA and I had rebuilt the escort with a fiberglass dash and 15's with coaxially mounted 5.25" components in bridges over them, in the kick panels. The subs were Image Dynamics IDW's- the best subs I've ever heard, incredibly expensive. they were never officially available from Image Dynamics but I managed to buy a pair from a fellow competitor since he had some extra. The components I mounted over them were chameleons, a carbon fiber coaxially mounted component image dynamics offered for a while. For equalization I had a complex system called the Rockford Fosgate Symmetry. Talk about expensive, I think paid nearly 1000 dollars for it. The amplifiers totallly over 3000 watts RMS and there were 4 for the components alone, one bridged to each speaker. The subs had a 1200 watt behemoth. It was amazing. I had even mounted the gauge cluster in the center of the dash (over 70 hours of work) to get a better sound stage. But I had a very bad accident before I was able to take pictures and the equipment and the car were totalled. And then I bought my s13 and put in a modest system that kept me happy for a while, but now I concentrate more on performance. I've been thinkin about designing a small sealed box for a single 8" to tuck in under the rear deck. fiberglass boxes are very light and very strong, they conform to the shape of your car so you get more space, and they look good.

if anyone is interested in having any work done just contact me.

http://www.bcae1.com/ Go there to learn something on box building/design. I believe they also have some calculators to help you design a box. It also explains the +/- of any type of box type even though andrave pretty much got it.

Basically the box has to be designed around the subs and the space you have available/want to have left. You would have to know the t/s parameters of the sub to make a ported box that sounds as clear as a properly sized sealed enclosure.

Just go read the site and familiarize yourself with box building and you'll be able to get the most of what you want out of a box from andrave or anyone else.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I might end up selling my system stuff though,my car currently needs struts/shocks,bushings,sometimes slow to start(needs diagnosing, and fixing),windsheild wiper blades, the auto trans doesn't want to stay in overdriver when I'm going 45-55ish....etc
