Power steering pump line torque

240SX How To: Removing/Replacing your PS pump

Following this write up exactly I torqued that banjo bolt to 65ft/lbs as it says after hand tightening. The threads stripped and the housing around it cracked. Is it supposed to be inch pounds rather than foot pounds? I know I had to impact that bolt off the old pump.

Is this my fault or a faulty part?

If you had the crush washers on each side of the banjo bolt, I'd say faulty part.

FSM says 36-51 ft-lbs

edit: which part did you break? The pump housing?

I did have new washers on either side.


I broke the pump housing. It split down the side of the housing. The split is about the length of the funky banjo bolt that holds it down. A majority of the crack goes right down the seam where the two pump halves I guess were cast or joined together.


The guy at the store said "65ft/lbs? oh it's a banjo bolt it shoudl have been 65 in/lbs" There's no way a power steering line is in inch pounds. I have screws on my r/c car tighter than that, haha.

Wow, I usually stay away from using a impact to remove or re-torque items like these. Can strip way to easy.

40 ft-lbs should of been sufficient . Its The crush washers do a good job at sealing it let alone.

To be clear I used an impact to remove it from the old pump because I couldn't get a hammer situated in a way to get the thing cracked loose, I didn't use the impact on the new pump

Meh i hand torqued all the bolts when i did my sr swap including PS lines and such, no probs whatsoever still.

I did it by hand and tried it and it sprayed fluid everywhere, then I went for the torque settings and no beans. I think the casting was flawed before hand, I just want to know if it was my fault or not, haha.

and next time, dont overtorque it like a knuckle head

If your crush washers are still in usable condition theres no reason why you can't hand tighten it to the point it feels tight. Ive always just hand tightened by feel with good washers and never had a problem.
