Tf-works: S13 ka-t drift build

KA-T DRIFT BUILD PART 1

A few weeks ago we were brought a KA-T S13 with a laundry list of parts we were going to be installing, as well as plans for a bit of love and normal maintenance here and there. However, the more we dug into the car on the initial tear down, the more we found that needed to be fixed and replaced. No big deal, this was a 25 year old car that was seemingly put together on a tight budget by the previous owner. On the hand, the current owner bought it knowing what needed to be done and how he wanted the car to look and perform, so he brought it to us to fulfill his vision! The first order of business was pulling out the previously boosted KA and checking on its overall condition.

Well hello there! We have a bent rod.

This KA was definitely in need of a rebuild and top to bottom refresh.

A set of fresh Manley connecting rods ready to replace the tired OEM ones.

CP Pistons to go with the Manley rods.

The chassis itself was a bit on the rough side as well. The frame rails were mostly smashed in…

… or missing!

The waste gate piping was worth mentioning. Very interesting design…

The floorboard had patches of rust as well, this was the worst bit where you could clearly see the carpet through the “floor”.

There was extensive rust on the original chassis so we contacted the owner and planned to re-shell, moving everything we could salvage from the old car onto a new chassis. This way the car would be safe, in better shape than when it came, and would be less prone to problems in the future.

A few things that were salvaged off of the old shell to be installed on the new one!

A fresh steering rack and tie rods ready for the new shell.

Clean! No rust on the shell that everything will be swapped over to.

Perks of being a Florida car, no salt on the roads. We did however find a massive damn spider under the car… Cons of being a Florida car. NOPE.

Solid.

Frame rails are in much better shape than the original car.

Ready for its new life!

The KA came back from the machine shop so we got right to work!

The all new Tomei MLS head gasket was a perfect fit for the KA-T build!

The KA24DE multi layer steel head gasket from Tomei is a super grommet type, which is dual sealing for the coolant, oil, and gases.

The cylinder head is on, we set the Tomei Poncoms in for a quick photo before setting them in their proper position to go with TDC.

So fresh!

ATI Super Damper installed on the KA.

New timing chains and tensioners from Japan!

Camshaft retainer caps installed and torqued to spec.

Double checking the torque specs on the rod caps…

The donor chassis waiting to start it’s new life!

We opted for the Mr. Gasket copper exhaust manifold gasket that features an embossed O-ring design to increase sealing pressure around the exhaust ports, creating a tight, leak-proof seal.

TOMEI KA24DET turbo manifold is on! Just waiting for the S15 T28 to come in next week.

The build is almost wrapped up, we’re waiting on a few more things to come in until the engine gets dropped in later this week.

TF-WORKS: KA-T S13 Drift Build

KA-T DRIFT BUILD PART 2

Back on track with the KA-T S13 drift build, the engine was mostly tied up and assembled in the first part of our build documentation. What was left on the engine was waiting for the turbo to arrive, tap the oil pan for the oil lines to the turbo, and modify the S13 intake manifold. Chassis wise, we’re going to be installing the hydraulic e-brake, coilovers and installing the engine!

The S15 T28 ball bearing turbo sits nicely on the Tomei Expreme manifold!

Cool turbo sounds, awaiting..

We ordered a fresh oil pan from Nissan for the perfect fit, then welded this bung onto it for the oil return line for the turbo!

Everything lined up!

Prepping the S13 intake manifold for a bit of welding!

If you didn’t know, the S13 KA24DE manifold has butterfly valves built in it to help with low end torque. When the S14 rolled around and replaced the S13, they opted to get rid of the butterfly valves. Instead of us getting another manifold from an S14, we decided to convert the S13 manifold and weld the holes in the runner closed.

Fire!

All clean!

Battery relocation to the hatch area!

Done!

The back of the S15 T28 turbo.

The whole assembly.

Running the hydraulic e-brake cable through the driveshaft tunnel, and up to the final location!

Fresh drilled/slotted rotors matched up with Wilwood calipers will have no problem locking up the rear for e-brake entries.

Mounted up the axle back section of the TOMEI Extreme Titanium exhaust! The mid section of the exhaust will be installed once we fabricate a resonated test pipe.

Our clutch choice for the KA-T power was a 6 pad ceramic Stage 4 clutch from our friends over at Competition Clutch!

All bolted on.

All that remains is to bolt on the transmission and then the engine will be ready to be dropped in its new home!

We transferred over the Z32 TT calipers that were on the original shell, only to find out they were completely seized. Rough! So we used them as cores to get a set of fresh re-manufactured calipers.

Fresh and clean!

Project Kics R40 lug nuts use a rotating tapered edge that will not damage the wheel it is tightened upon.

The engine is in! Along with the intake manifold, we replaced all of the vacuum lines underneath the manifold with new hoses as well as brand new NISMO 550CC injectors.

Something about a brand new oil pan… it’s just great.

The oil lines from the turbo to the oil pan clear the steering shaft assembly perfectly.

Looks nice and tidy!

Mishimoto oil sandwich plate adapter to be ran with a Koyorad oil cooler!

Oil return line to the mint oil pan!

You can see the coolant line to the turbo, and also the fresh vacuum lines.

ATI Super Damper for KA24DE.

Here’s the line splitter that is a part of the GKTech hydro e-brake line kit!

The split runs a line to either side of the car.

The car will be sitting on Stance XR1 suspension, with inverted monotube front dampers for extra strength for the MacPherson style suspension on the front.

With MacPherson style suspension, the shock sees side load during use. Inverted monotube dampers are used because the shock body/casing is much stronger and can withstand the forces, while a non-inverted/ upright damper would be putting all that force on the piston shaft and seals, which can bend from excessive force from Gs or hitting chicanes/curbs/potholes etc. Also, the main body of the damper isn’t enclosed in the threaded damper casing which allows heat to dissipate more efficiently and perform more precisely than conventional upright dampers. It’s a no brainer!

Circuit Sports 50/50 tail lights installed!

Nameless Performance e-brake handle with a Wildwood reservoir installed in the car.

That’s all for part 2 of the KA-T S13 build, check back next week for updates on part 3!

I love this build, can't wait for part 3. Did you guys make those turbo oil and coolant lines? Would you happen to know if lines made for an sr20 t25/28 bottom mount would fit a ka-t application, also bottom mount t25/28?

Part 3 is coming very soon, still have some photo editing to do! Yes, we did make the lines. And yes, lines will work if your KA already has been properly tapped for oil feed/drain etc, for the T25/T28.
