Andy,

I like the stud pro tip. Did you use a hand drill to accomplish this or a drill press?

What P/N ARP stud did you use? I will have to add these to my list, especially when I make it out to the drag strip.

ARP 100-7716. You’ll need four. They fit in S14 front hubs without modification. I used a shitty harbor freight drill press haha.

Here they are in the front hubs.

This is a factory RX-8 18x8 wheel. It's funny how thin of a wheel you need to be flush when you're running zero camber.

This is factory S13 control arms with the factory lock stop, on a 17x7 G35 wheel with a 15mm spacer. Unfortunately the trailing wheel still hits the front of the LCA, but I think with tires the tire will hit the tension rod before this happens. An aftermarket tubular control arm would fix this. I'll have to make a small lock stop to try and limit the arm for now, as I imagine the 17x8s will make this worse.

Pulled the baffles out of the stock gas tank in preparation for the hydromat install. All but one of the factory spot welds was already broken, so I just had to wiggle it off and then bend it all up so it fit out the sending unit hole.

New and improved puck mounts on.

Cheap ass tension rods from the other car and swaybar installed.

Fender braces in.

Seat and Nardi in.

Not much chassis work left, and then I have to get the engine in so I can start building lines for the swirl pot, etc. Still waiting on gaskets from Nissan Japan, I guess they've been backordered for a while.

Not a ton of progress this weekend as I discovered the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking, so I need to order one of those. Did get the new timing belt/pulleys and ARP hardware in. Thing is filthy from the valvecovers leaking.

Haha, sometimes I'm too nerdy for my own good. I have all the fittings I need now; I just need a vice so I can assemble the hoses. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend. If it works, I think it'll be a great alternative to a fuel cell or surge tank if you don't need the certifications for competition.

I?ve thought about adding one to the S14, but securing it concerns me.

I'm not going to secure it to anything, but mine is almost as wide as the tank front to back. Just think of it like those fancy rotating oil pickups, haaha!

Andy, what size drill bit did you use? I?m assuming something just under the knurl size but a legit drill bit number, decimal or fraction would help!

I used a 14mm drill bit as that's what is recommended by ARP.

Perfect! Thanks. I?ve got these and a bunch of other shit or order from Summit. I was going to convert to 12mmx1.5mm for all the drag wheels out there but forgeline has some nice drag spec options that utilize standard lug nuts. I didn?t want to convert because it?s not a drag spec car, just something I toy with here and there.

Looks like I'm finally getting my RB25 NEO gasket set from Japan after about four months of being on backorder this week.

Here's a boring demo of the wheel stud installation if you're curious.

Thanks man, definitely looking to get back into building harnesses. Have some things going on this week that may change things up a bit for me and allow me to start building another harness sooner rather than later.

I don't care about dust hah.

On another note, I normally update this in my downtime at work, but now IMGUR is blocked where I host all my photos, so it's a PITA. I'll try and get some updates in the next few days.

Okay, it's been a minute, and a fair bit has happened since I've been able to update this.

The biggest one being I traded the RB25 setup. I really loved the idea of the engine, but there were just too many things that I wanted to change/had to change in order for it to be a reliable setup for the way I drive my car. Also, the cost of replacement should the worst happen would mean the car would be down for a long period of time or I'd have to switch setups anyway. Enter what I traded for:

The VH45DE. The V8 everyone loves to hate, haha. This is an early engine that's already had it's timing chain guides replaced with the steel backed ones. Also included was a Z32 transmission and one piece driveshaft, which was another big missing piece in the RB swap, as I would have destroyed that 71c in short order. This setup was running and driving in an S13 already, so I was hoping it was good to go. I got a good chunk of cash from him as well, so that was nice.

While chatting on the VH facebook group about the trade, a local offered me another complete VH45 with Z32 trans with milled bellhousing and adapter, all for $500. I couldn't resist, so now I have two of everything.

The black valve cover one has quite the varnish on the inside, but otherwise seems in good shape.

VH's are weird, and it took me ages to scrape all the red RTV off so I could seal it up with some fresh GT-R glue.

Swapping the valvecovers over from the other car because I don't really trust the black ones as they look like they might have been beadblasted and powdercoated, and I've heard the horror stories. I'll have them chemically stripped at some point so I can use them.

In the above you can see the atrocious swap 'headers' that were built to make the VH fit in the chassis. The guy showed me a clip of him doing donuts and it sounds like two out of sync straightpiped EJ25's, so I wasn't too pumped on that. I've started modifying the manifolds, mostly for sound, but they may flow a little better as well? I'll definitely be building some equal length manifolds with proper collectors at some point, but I really need to drive this thing before the snow flies.

This is the left side:

I'm going to modify the front two cylinders a bit as well, and then do the same thing to the right side manifold. Hopefully it doesn't sound like a bag of dicks.

The wiring harness for this thing is also a mess, and while I would love to (and probably will eventually) just build a completely new motorsports-spec harness for it, I'm going to fix it up and run it for now.

Here's some shots of the lovely work that someone did...

I've gotta get some parts coming for this.

Also, the modified shifter setup has super blown bushings, but luckily I found an Xcessive bracket I had laying around in a box.

And I finally pushed the car out of the garage (after rolling the other quarter) and up to the other one where it will receive it's new heart! This made me so dumb happy, as it's been in there for almost two years now for what was supposed to be a quick fixer upper. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Hahaha no, not yet. I decided I didn?t even want to put the engine in without some quality equal length exhaust manifolds, so I talked to Burns Stainless and they spec?d me out stepped runner lengths and collectors, so now I?m stuck saving for those.

I?ll update this thread in a few days, I have definitely made a bunch of progress outside of that. Going to be replacing the crusty frame rails and doing some reinforcements to the chassis that I think make a lot of sense but I never see anyone do.

Also raising my diff 40mm so the stock tripod axles can live at the low ride height+wisefab. I have pictures and a soon to be released video on that.

It's long overdue my friend! Here we go...

Last we left off I was saving up for some Burns Stainless material and collectors to fabricate some equal length exhaust manifolds for the VH. Well, I happened to stumble upon this steal of a KA and so I snagged it.

This is how I got it home.

Since I'm trying to drive this thing this year, I decided to move forward with the KA, since that will allow me to do so, plus develop an engine harness for the KA and SR at the same time.

I'll be putting the VH into one of my other chassis' for mockup and header fabrication when I get there. It will happen.

In the meantime to make some money for the project, I build an engine harness for a supercharged Coyote Mustang drift car.

and bought an ebay header off a guy since the KA didn't come with the stocker. It's wild how exhaust manifolds for the KA have dried up, there aren't even that many on ebay anymore, and they want like $250 for them... yikes...

Well of course this one was in rough shape, and I can't stand how they exit in 2.5" when we all know a proper exhaust for a KA is 3". So I did some modifying

Chinese quality here...

and some hackjob quality here:

So I cleaned it up and got an expansion cone to 3"

and it's all tacked together for now as I need to test fit it and make sure things are going to line up.

Now, on to raising the diff. This is a PITA. Alas, I would like to not kill my stock axles and I don't want to spend the money right now to convert things over to Z33/34 ones, so here we go...

Pulled the already semi-crusty subframe out again...

and started chopping and welding. The goal was 40-50mm up, as that's what the wisefab raises the hub and my buddy Jay has proven you can do it.

So I'm sure if you had access to lasercutters and scanners and all that fancy shit, you could do this a lot easier/more precisely. When you're in the garage with hand tools and a cutoff wheel, it's a giant pain to get things right.

But, I got it done.

I wanted to take it to and get it powdercoated, but the Mazda died and I had to emergency purchase a car, which ended up being this:

Which I got for a steal and I actually enjoy. There lies the problem. I didn't realize that I can't fit an S13 subframe in the trunk of an E36...

So I wirewheeled the subframe and painted it this garish silver color so it doesn't rot to pieces while I move the chassis into the other garage to put the engine/trans in and finish up the rest of the chassis work.

And I'm going to put it back in tonight and reinstall the rear suspension so I can move the car.

I also replaced that broken front subframe stud with an allen bolt that I welded in with the welder on KILL and ground smooth.

Oh and I got some pretty parts back from the powdercoater.

And a VH doesn't fit with the rack forward unless you trim the oil pan. So more work to do before the VH goes in...

Also also, I recently discovered an oil company based in Monteno, IL called High Performance Lubricants, and after studying a few things and talking with the guys there, this is the oil I'll be running from here on out. It uses a base oil of PAO, mPAO, Esters and Alkylated Naphthalene. This means really high quality base stocks and a killer additive package. I honestly think it's the best engine oil on the market right now.
