A gate is a gate, just a hole for exhaust to move through. If it is large enough and designed right, even if too small, you can compensate with engine configuration such as camshaft exhaust valve closing points (camshaft gear timing can assist your goals) but again, horrible idea on an SR20 because of the fact you need to remove the valvecover to modify camshaft setting, AS WELL as the looming crunch if the gears let loose.

OP, keep it simple and run your turbo on an external gate at 18lbs. You'll make your power, wont need to put in cams, and have a better powerband.
