Check brake pads, they are probably due for a replacement. If that's not the case, you're low on brake fluid due to a leak or some other reason. Either way, the light will come on when the fluid in the brake reservoir is low, like andrave just said.

I can't believe people drive cars and not know these things... It's basic maintenance for cryin out loud!
